Thank you for your question. I have expanded the explanation further. (it was quite weak). I hope it helps. In terms of "B":

B. While it is true that ICE focuses on transferring knowledge (aligned with objectivism) and CLE supports the creation of subjective understanding through exploration and communication (aligned with constructivism), the passage does not frame this relationship in terms of objective vs. subjective understanding directly. This choice simplifies the roles of ICE and CLE too much.

Basically, the passage does not say and it is not possible to state simply that CLE is dedicated to creating subjective understanding among learners. Maybe but there is no clarity if this is indeed so.

Both ICE and CLE utilize similar tools, but their applications differ in the context of teacher and learner roles. For instance, both environments provide a chat room, but ICE uses the chat room to facilitate teacher-led instruction, whereas CLE uses the chat room to support student-to-student communication and collaboration.

Answer is C. Both ICE and CLE utilize similar tools, but their applications differ in the context of teacher and learner roles.

A. ICE and CLE are mutually exclusive components with no overlapping functions or tools. - The passage mentions that both environments share some tools like chat rooms.

B. While ICE focuses on transferring objective knowledge, CLE is dedicated to creating subjective understanding among learners. - The passage talks about teacher-centered and learner-centered approaches, not objective vs. subjective knowledge.

D. The effectiveness of ICE and CLE depends solely on the technological capabilities they possess. - The passage emphasizes that the learning methods supported by the technology matter more than the technology itself.

E. CLE is a subset of ICE, mainly used for enhancing learner-teacher interactions. - While CLE might enhance interaction, the passage describes it as a distinct environment focused on student collaboration, not just teacher interaction.

How are we drawing the inference from the passage that "similar tools" are being used in both ICE & CLE ?

Pls help bb

I don’t quite agree with the solution. The only common tool mentioned is chat rooms, otherwise the tools differ.

Having 1 tool won't be enough to call the superset of tools of ICE and CLE similar.

Maybe, but the option doesn’t claim that all tools used by ICE and CLE are identical. It simply suggests that both types of learning use similar tools, which isn’t incorrect given the single overlap mentioned out of couple of examples being discussed in the passage. Also, it’s not always about finding an absolutely perfect answer, but rather the most accurate one even if you have slight doubt, and I believe option C fits that better than the others.

I don’t quite agree with the solution. apart from the chat room, nothing indicates that any of the other tools are similar!

Yes, I agree the question banks on chat rooms being the similar tool b/w both environments. But seems like it's not too obvious, as we have seen similar queries in the past.

bb - Do you think it would make sense to tone down the language a bit here, for example by using “some similar tools,” to avoid creating that sense of an exact match that readers are pushed into assuming when they read option C?

Thank you both - I agree - adding that qualification should resolve the concern raised without much of a change so it seems like a good easy suggestion.

The change has been made.

hi bb, the reason I rejected C is- "Both ICE and CLE utilize some similar tools, but their applications differ in the context of teacher and learner roles.", because in CLE how teachers role has changed with respect to ICE is not discussed at all, so I preferred B over C here. Can you help here?

C is still better because it sticks to what the passage actually gives both ICE and CLE use similar tools (like chat rooms), and their usage differs since ICE is more instruction-driven while CLE is learner-driven, which implicitly reflects different roles. B, on the other hand, introduces “objective vs subjective” knowledge, which the passage never explicitly states, so it goes beyond the text.
