IMO option (D) "for survival" is the idiomatic choice.

(A) to survive: It doesn't convey the purpose.

(B) for surviving: It is less idiomatic.

(C) of animals to survive: This option introduces unnecessary complexity and is awkward.

(D) for survival: This option is concise and effectively conveys the purpose.

(E) for animals’ survival: It adds a possessive form ("animals'"), which is not essential.

(A) Correct: The phrase "the endurance required to survive" correctly expresses the idea that endurance is necessary for survival in the tundra.
(B) Incorrect: The phrase "the endurance required for surviving" is ambiguous than "the endurance required to survive".
(C) Incorrect: The phrase "the endurance required of animals to survive" is awkward leaves room for ambiguity.
(D) Incorrect: The phrase "the endurance required for survival" is ambiguous than "the endurance required to survive". It also does not specify whose survival is being referred to.
(E) Incorrect: The phrase "the endurance required for animals’ survival" is ambiguous than "the endurance required to survive". It also changes the meaning of the sentence by suggesting that the endurance is required for the survival of the animals rather than for survival in the tundra in general.

The most appropriate answer choice is (D) for survival.

The phrase "for survival" correctly expresses the purpose or reason for the thick layer of adipose tissue in the animals living in the tundra. It effectively conveys that the purpose of the thick layer of adipose tissue is to ensure the animals' survival in the harsh conditions of the tundra.

(A) to survive
This answer choice is not as precise as (D). While it conveys a similar meaning, it does not explicitly indicate that the purpose of the thick layer of adipose tissue is for survival.

(B) for surviving
This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The phrase "for surviving" does not fit well in the sentence structure and does not effectively convey the intended meaning.

(C) of animals to survive
This answer choice is awkwardly worded and disrupts the flow of the sentence. It is not as concise and clear as answer choice (D).

(E) for animals' survival
This answer choice is also correct and conveys a similar meaning to (D). However, (D) is more concise and directly expresses the purpose of the thick layer of adipose tissue.

(A) to survive -->noun + infinitive -->Wrong
(B) for surviving -->Akward
(C) of animals to survive -->Seems good but is redundant
(D) for survival -->Right construction, because we need a noun
(E) for animals’ survival --> Redundant

Right answer: D

IMO D, but was on the fence between D and E

A - to survive implies endurance as a concept is required to survive, incorrect

B - surviving is not the right form of the word

C - more convoluted than choices D and E

D - for survival uses the correct preposition and is less redundant than E, as the latter part of the sentence says 'such animals' so using 'animals' twice so close to each other seems redundant

E - see above, I think it is redundant but technically could be more specific/relevant. I still think D is right, but kind of a tossup.

(A) to survive
'such animals' phrase has got no antecedent

(B) for surviving
to survive is the correct idiomatic usage; 'such animals' phrase has got no antecedent

(C) of animals to survive
to survive is the correct idiomatic usage; 'such animals' phrase possesses antecedent in the form of animals in the underlined portion

(D) for survival
to survive is the correct idiomatic usage; 'such animals' phrase has got no antecedent

(E) for animals’ survival
to survive is the correct idiomatic usage;

(C) is the answer

(A) to survive- Mention of animals is missing which is required since the non underlined portion mentions 'such animals'
(B) for surviving- Mention of animals is missing which is required since the non underlined portion mentions 'such animals'
(C) of animals to survive- correct
(D) for survival- Mention of animals is missing which is required since the non underlined portion mentions 'such animals'
(E) for animals’ survival-- such lacks an antecedent as animals' is possessive

The portion in italics is the dependent clause as it begins with Because. the main clause is "such animals tend to have a thick layer of adipose tissue that insulates them." - The subject of the main clause "Such animals" should have a reference to the animals earlier in the sentence (in the dependent clause). But it is not so - Hence, option A, B and D are out.
Between C and E - in E animals is in possessive form - hence E is incorrect.
Answer C
(A) to survive
(B) for surviving
(C) of animals to survive
(D) for survival
(E) for animals’ survival

The last part of the sentence uses "such animals" which will need an antecedent in the earlier sentence.

So A, B and D are out.

In E, "animals’ survival" is possesive and "such animals" can't refer back to it.

Because of the endurance required to survive in the tundra, a biome marked by its frigid temperatures, such animals tend to have a thick layer of adipose tissue that insulates them.

(A) to survive
(B) for surviving
(C) of animals to survive
(D) for survival
(E) for animals’ survival

Solution: Original underlined phrase is wrong as the the preposition "because of" typically requires a noun or a noun phrase after it, not an infinitive. It is unclear whose survival is being referred to. It could be interpreted as the survival of the animals or the survival of something else entirely.

(A) to survive
As explained above, INCORRECT

(B) for surviving
This option uses the gerund "for surviving" awkwardly in this sentence. Gerunds are typically used as nouns or noun phrases. Also no reference to whose survival is discussed here. INCORRECT

(C) of animals to survive
This option could be misinterpreted as suggesting that the endurance itself belongs to the animals, rather than the survival being for the animals' benefit. The sentence structure is not concise. INCORRECT

(D) for survival
Same issue as in the original phrase i.e. It is unclear whose survival is being referred to. INCORRECT

(E) for animals’ survival
This option uses the preposition "for" appropriately, followed by the possessive noun phrase "animals' survival," creating a grammatically correct structure. CORRECT

Option E is the right answer
