So, total no. of programs sold by Boris and Fiona = 1500/3 = 500

As per the statemenet Boris sold as many programs at the afternoon performance as Fiona did at the evening performance

AND

Fiona sold as many programs in the afternoon as Boris did in the evening.

Only 2 possibilities with total programs as 500

So no. of programs the team sold in afternoon is 250 = Y
and total no. of programs Boris sold that days is 250 = X

b denotes the number of places sold on the evening 
we know from the text that: Boris sold as many programs at the afternoon performance as Fiona did at the evening performance. Fiona sold as many programs in the afternoon as Boris did in the evening

thus we can draw the following table :

then we know that price x number of places sold in the afternoon + places sold in the evening equals 1500
since the price is $3 for each place:
we have :

3(2a + 2b )= 1500 
2a + 2b= 500 
a+b= 250 
we are asking about X which denotes the total number of programs Boris sold that day, and Y the total number of programs the team sold in the afternoon.

from the table we can deduce that X=a+b and Y=a+b and we found that a+b equals 250 !!!!
