1 gallon = 128 ounces
1 tank = 5120 ounces = 40 gallons
Distance before installation = 14 miles/gallon.
total distance = 14 * 40 = 560 miles

After installation
Van uses only 70% as much fuel to travel the same distance
1 gallon = 14 miles(previously)
0.7 gallon = 14 miles(now)
so, 1 gallon = 20 miles (now)

New Total distance = 20 miles* 40 gallons = 800 miles
Extra miles = 800-560 = 240 miles

Increased mileage is 14/.7 miles per gallon i.e 20miles per gallon. Hence, there is increase of 6 miles per gallon. In 5120 ounce, there are 40 gallons based on conversion given. Hence, there is increase of 40*6 miles i.e 240 miles the van can travel after addition of fuel saving system is installed after full tank.

For full tank: 5120 ounces
1 gallon = 128ounces => 40gallons =5120ounces.

Now initially the car travelled: 14 miles in 1 gallon, now it travels 14miles in 0.7 gallons
So initially it travelled 14*40=560 miles on a full tank
Now it travels: 40*14/0.7 = 800 miles
# of miles more= 800-560 =240miles.

First I found the tank size in gallons which was 5120 oz / 128 oz in a gallon which gave me 40 gallons.

Then I found the new miles per gallon for the van after the system was installed. Do this I divided the initial 14 miles per gallon rate by .7 to get 20 miles per gallon.

The original range on 40 gallons of gas is 40 gallons *14 mpg which gives 560 miles.

The new range is 40 gallons * 20 mpg which is 800

800-560 = 240 mile difference

Before fuel-saving, mileage=14 miles/gallon
After fuel-saving, same distance will consume 70% fuel of what it used to. Therefore, 14 miles would not consume 0.7 gallons.
New mileage=14/0.7 miles/gallon=20 miles/gallon

Mileage change = 20-14 = 6 miles/gallon, i.e. for each gallon - the van runs 6 miles more.

Fuel tank capacity = 5120 ounces = 5120/128 gallons = 40 gallons
Extra distance covered = Fuel tank capacity * Mileage increase = 40*6 = 240 miles

Tank total capacity = 5120 ounces = 5120 / 128 = 40 Gallons

Using unitary method:

Earlier, van could travel 14 miles in 1 gallon. Thus, it could travel 40*14 (=560) miles in 40 gallons.

Now, it could travel the same 14 miles in 70% fuel (= 1*0.7), or 0.7 gallon. Thus, it can travel (40 / 0.7)*14 (=800) miles in 40 gallons

Additional miles on full tank = 800 - 560 = 240

1. Find out how many gallons the tank holds
The tank holds 5,120 ounces of fuel, and there are 128 ounces in a gallon.

5,120 ÷ 128 = 40 gallons (This is the size of a full tank)

2. Calculate the distance on a full tank BEFORE the system
The van gets 14 miles per gallon.

40 gallons × 14 miles/gallon = 560 miles

3. Calculate the new mileage AFTER the system
The van now uses 70% (or 0.7) as much fuel to travel the same distance. If it used to take 1 gallon to go 14 miles, it now takes 0.7 gallons to go those same 14 miles.

x=5120/128
=40 gallon

Before the system is installed:
14miles=1 gallon
D miles=40 gallons (cross multiply)
D=14*40 =560 miles

After the system is installed :
14 miles =0.7 gallon
d miles=40 gallon
d=(14*40)/0.7=800

Difference : d-D =800-560=240miles extra

we have clearly
miles=rate x gallons

5120oz/128=40 gallons.

miles=14x40
and also
miles=newRatex0.7x40

equate by miles

14x40=newRatex0.7x40
newRate=20mpg

old distance=14x40=560
new distance=20x40=800
difference = 240

30 % of 5120 is 1536 ounces, which is 12 gallons. Since 70% fuel is used , we need to see how much vehicle will go in remaining 30%.

Current mileage = 14 miles in 1 gallons

New mileage will use 30% less fuel , we can derive that it will cover 14 miles in 0.7 gallons of fuel
therefore current mileage = 14/0.7 --> 20 miles per gallon

Total fuel capacity = 51280/128 --> 40 gallon

Total miles per new mileage = 40 * 20 = 800 miles
Total miles per old mileage = 40 * 14 = 560 miles
Required Distance = 800-560

Therefore 240 is the answer

we need two seteps only divide 14/.7 to get 20 , new milage and the second is 5120/128 which we see closely give us 40 as 512 is 4 time 128 then multiply 40*20-40*14=240

Hello ,
currently in 1 gallon it will travel 14 miles , so after fuel saving system in 1 gallon it will tarvel 14/0.7=20 miles
so for every 1 gallon is will travel extra 6 miles
so for 5120 ounces it will travel extra
5120 *6/128= 240 miles
Hence option C is correct
