We are given that a delivery van has a mileage of 14 mpg
After a fuel-saving system is installed, the van will use only 70% as much fuel as it used
before to travel the same distance.

Before, van used 1 Gallon to cover 14 mile,
and after system installation, van will use 0.7 Gallon to cover 14 miles; So new mileage will be = 14/0.7 = 20 mpg

So after fuel-saving system installation, van can cover 6 more mile per gallon.

Capacity of van's fuel tank = 5120 ounces, and 128 ounces = 1 Gallon

So fuel tank's capacity = 5120 / 128 = 40 Gallon

An question is how many more miles can a van travel on a full fuel tank after system is installed

= 40 (g) * 6 (mpg)
= 240 miles
So option C is the correct answer.

I solved this using the direct proportion method. It's an easy one.

i got option C !! I found this one easy !!
-- 5120 / 128 = 40 g ,, now 40 * 14 = 560 ,,
-- Earlier it is 70% now it is 100% that's why 560 / 70 % = 800 ( new milage )
-- now new - old = 800 - 560 = 240

140 miles in 10 g (before), now 140 mils in 7 g i.e 20 miles per gallon.
1g = 128 ounces
multiply 40 both sides'
40g = 5120 ounces
Therefore, full tank capacity is 40 g
before,
distance = 14 * 40 = 560 miles
now,
distance = 20 * 40 = 800 miles

hence, 800 - 560 = 240 miles morre

Average given is 14 miles per gallon.
Capacity – 5120 ounces = 5120/128 = 40 gallons.

before installation of the fuel-saving system,
Distance travelled with 40 gallons = 40 gallons * 14 miles/gallons = 560 miles

Now, 560 miles is travelled in 70% of the total fuel = 70% of 40 = 28 gallons

gallons of fuel left = 40 - 28 = 12 gallons

28 gallons -> 560 miles
12 gallons -> 560/28 *12

= 240 miles

So, \(\frac{{14mi}{1gl}[}{fraction]\) after change \([fraction]{14mi}{0.7gl}}\)
Therefore that's 20mi per gallon now. \(5,120 ounces=[fraction]{5,120 ounces}{128 ounces in gallon}= 40 gallons[/fraction], 40*20 - 40*14 =240 \)

And the final answer is (C)

5120 ounces = 5120/128 = 40 gallons

Earlier the car used to drive 14 mi/g

After system installation the car drives with 70% of the earlier fuel consumption rate. i.e. @ 14/0.7 = 20 mi/g

With 40 gallons of fuel the car used to travel = 14×40 miles

With same amt. Of fuel the car can now travel 20×40 miles

Hence, the increase in travel distance = 20×40 - 14×40 = 240 miles. .. Ans. C.

I am unable to upload solution from notebook.
So without system
1 gallon ----> 14 miles
128 ounces ----> 14 miles
5120 ounces ----> 14 * 5120/128=560 miles

with system, 560/0.7=800 miles

so the difference is 800-560 =240 miles C

In 1 gallon- 14 miles travel
After installation of fuel saving system, it consumes 70% fuel, implies, in 0.7 gallon- 14 miles; therefore new mileage- 1 gallon = 14/0.7 = 20 miles.

Finding capcity of tank in gallons:
5,120/28 = 40 Gallons

How far the van go before the upgrade
old mileage = 14 miles per gallon
40 gallons*14mpg= 560 miles

new mileage after upgrade
the van now only needs 70% as much fuel go he same distance. that meant it got more efficient
so we divide the old mileage by 0.70
14/0.70 = 20 mpg

how far the van go after the upgrade
40 gallons*20 mpg = 800 miles

how many more miles is that
800-560= 240 miles

Current mileage for the delivery van is 14 miles/gallon
After fuel-saving system is installed, mileage would be 14 miles/0.7 gallon = 20 miles/gallon

5120 ounces / 128 ounces = 40 gallons

So earlier with 40 gallons, distance travelled would be 560 miles

IMO - ANS is E = 800 Miles
Given => Mileage = 14Miles/Gallon and then it said after fuel saving install it will use only 70% so in simple word it says 14 miles/ 0.7 Gallon (little tricky to understand) we could say 1.3 * 14 miles but that would be wrong so after fuel saving installment the mileage would be 20 miles / gallon.
Then just basic mathematics Ounces to Gallon = 5120/128 = 40 Gallons so 20*40 = 800 miles option (E)

I do have one extra shortcut trick for this specific question if someone just multiple 14 miles/gallon to 40 Gallons he will get 560 and only 1 answer choice is bigger than that value so answer could be calculated that way as we understand without fuel save we could run 560 miles then more than that just 1 value but it will work for this specific question here answer choice help us.

So 14miles in 1 gallon, after installing the system, 14 miles in 0.7gallons so it is 20 miles in 1 gallon.

5120/ 128 =40 gallons

560 miles in 40 gallons in general, but after installing the system, 800 miles in 40 gallons
