GIVEN THAT 14miles/gallon as mileage.
let before be x and after be 70/100(x)
since 1g=128 ounces
for 5120 ounces = (5120/128) g

since 14 m = 1g then
5120/128*14 miles = x fuel consumed. Then
5120/128*14*100/70 = fuel consumed after saving = 800. Option E

5120/128 = 40 gallons
Normal case: 14miles/gallon, then on 40 gallons 40×14=560 miles
Special case: if 0.7 gallons required for 14 miles, 14×40/0.7 = 800 miles can be travelled

Original mileage = 14 miles/gallon
Now uses 70% as much fuel to cover the same distance
Tank holds 5,120 ounces, converted to gallons that's
\(\frac{5120}{128}\) = 40 gallons

So per the original mileage:
14 miles - 1 gallon
x miles - 40 gallons
x = 14 x 40 = 560 miles {cross multiplication}

70% of 40 gallons it uses to cover 560 miles
70% of 40 = 70/100 x 40 = 28 gallons

40 - 28 = 12 gallons is what's left, which is the additional distance it will cover.
so, if it does:
28 gallons - 560 miles
12 gallons - x miles

x = \(\frac{(560x12)}{28}\) = \(\frac{(7 x 80 x 3 x 4)}{7 x 4 }\)= 240

thus, Answer is C. 240 miles

1 gallon = 128 ounce

old system = 1 gallon, can drive 14 miles.

so total miles driven = fuel * mileage
(5120/128) *(14/1)

First let's calculate the number of miles that can be travelled before the system is installed.

We have 5120 ounces in the tank----> 5120/128= 40 gallons.

with 1 gallon of fuel, we can cover 14 miles, hence, with 40 gallons we can cover 560 miles.

Now, calculating the number of miles after the system is installed.

If for 14 miles we use 128 ounce, then for 1 mile we use 64/7 ounce.

70% of 64/7= 6.4 ounce per mile will be used. Which means now the distance travlled is 5120/6.4= 800

No. of miles travelled more than before= 800-560=240

solving this considering miles = distance, mileage = speed, gallons = time, and using distance = speed * time

initial mileage = 14mpg, let the distance be d and gallons be g ---- 1
updated mileage = x, distance = d, gallons = 0.7g (since 70% of the fuel will be used to cover the same distance) -----2

equating distance from 1 and 2
14 * g = x * 0.7 g
This gives x (updated mileage) = 20mpg

Now we have 5120 ounces of fuel, which is same as 5120/128 g = 40g of fuel
distance covered with initial mileage of 14mpg = 14*40 = 560 miles
distance covered with updated mileage of 20mpg = 20*40 = 800 miles

Additional distance = 800-560 = 240 miles, hence C)

The van will use only 70% means that it will use 0.7 gallons in 14 miles or 20 miles per gallon.
5120 ounces are 40 gallons.
Originally the van will cover 40*14 miles = 560 miles
After fuel-saving system installed the van will cover 40*20 miles = 800 miles

800 miles - 560 miles = 240 miles

so now to travel the same distance it will take 14*40=mileage*0.7*40 so new mileage will be 20

1. Convert oz given to gallons. 5120 oz / 128 oz per gallon = 40 gallons
2. Convert new rate of consumption from given of 14 miles per gallon expanded in equation form of 1 gallon * rate = 14 miles; to new rate of 7/10 * 1 gallon * rate = 14 miles ; which equal new rate of 20 miles per gallon. (rate = 14 * (10/7))
