A- Irrelevant.. not mentioned anywhere in the argument that nations GDP size is linked to the no of projects commissioned
B- we know percentage but amount depends on GDP size which is nowhere mentioned
C- Again irrelevant similar to Option A, The amount of money spent on any project and size of the project is not given so no one can determine this at least

D- Who can predict this. this is a hypothetical case. not a real world scenario. we can't guess.
E- of Corse the answer, since Argentina just reached 12% after increasing, and still soviet union spent is 15 % of GDP. So we can conclude, Soviet Union spent till 1980 is in percentage terms always remained higher than Argentina.

Soviet union
95,000 in 1970
70 000 in 1980
24% GDP in 1958 peak
15% GDP in 1980
steadily declined between 1958 and 1980

By 1980 india spend 20% on GDP on infrastructure and Argentina spent 12% of GDP on infrastructure

A wrong as no info on country's GDP
B. No. Given percentages of GDP but no dollar amounts
c. No. We are only given percentages
d. No indication of what will happen in future
e. Yes. Soviet Union spend always more that 15% GDP. Argentina was highest at 12%

Lots of facts given, but what you need to pick up on that no GDP numbers have been given.

Since Sovient union was stadily declining from 24% to 15%, between 1958 and 1980 it still outspent argentina in terms of percentage of gdp spent. Therefore, E.
But lets look at why others fail:

A - This is not supported as we dont know if the GDP size is directly correlated to the number of project.
B - Again not supported as percentages work only when we know percentage of what, 50%of something is bigger than 100% of nothing.
C - no correlation mentioned.
D - Future speculation, we cannot comment
E - see above

A- It does not show a direct relation between total GDP size and the number of projects.
B- Only the % of gdp is given and the actual currency amount is not given. a small % of a big economy can be big
C- the amount of money to the number of projects conflict. one nation could spend millions on a single massive project and another spends less money on many small projects.
D- We cannot predict the future
E- Since the lowest soviet level 15% is still higher than the highest Argentina 12%, the math says soviet spent a large %
E is correct

I used a process of elimination to arrive at answer

A. In the question stem, the spends are shown as a % to GDP and no causal relation is established between no of projects and GDP. Hence this is out of scope
B. Because everything is given as a % to GDP, we cannot surely say that Argentina and India spent more. Along with %, the absolute spend will depend on GDP amount as well.
C. Need not be true because one country might have spent its entire amount on 1 project while other might be spending on 100s of smaller projects.
D. No info is given in question about the number of projects of either of these 2 countries. Maybe they spent the whole of their budget in 1 mega project.
E. The lowest soviet union went was 15% and highest argentina went was 12%. Hence SU consistently spent more than A on public works as % of their respective GDPs. CORRECT CHOICE.

Option C is correct as we are trying to relate teh number of public works and teh % of GDP spent on INfrastructure.
Option A is flawed as we are not talking about nations GDP comparison instead on the % of GDP spent on Infrastructure.
Option b, d - nothing like that is mentioned in the passsage
Option E is incorrect as the % of GDP spent by Argentina was more than that of Soviet union in 1980 as suggested by the information in the passage

I chose answer E.

A - There is nothing in the text which provides any information about the relative sizes of the GDPs of the three countries mentioned.

B - We are given percentages of the GDP, not quantities, so this is not possible to assess.

C - Tempting as that appears to be the case for the Soviet Union, but we have no information about the number of public works built by the other countries; so we cannot determine a trend. Eliminate.

D - This is too big of a leap as there is no information about the number of public works projects for India and Argentina.

E - Yes, this is fair to say. The maximum Argentina spent was 12%, which is less than the lowest for Soviet Union during this time period, which was 15%. Therefore, this answer is supported.

The keyword here is steadily declining.
A - we don't have any direct relationship given between public work project and %GDP invested
B - numbers were not mentioned anywhere and we can't infer anything from just percentages
C - same as A
D - no future data
E correct; as the SU investment percentage was steadily declining.

The number of public works projects commissioned by the Soviet Union government dropped from 95,000 in 1970 to 70,000 in 1980. Spending on infrastructure in Soviet Union peaked at 24 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), in 1958, and was only 15 percent of the GDP in 1980. During this period, when Soviet Union’s percentage was steadily declining, India and Argentina increased the percentage of their GDP’s spent on infrastructure to 20 percent and 12 percent, respectively.

premise of the argument :
Public works projects comissioned by the soviet union Government dropped from 95,000 to 70,000 ( 1970 to 1980 , 10 years )

Peak of the spending done on infrastructure in Soviet Union was 24 percent of GDP in year 1958 and in 1980 it was 15 %

conclusion ; during period of 1958 to 1980 India & Argentina increased the percentage of its GDP spent on infrastructure to 20 & 12 %

Which of the following conclusions is best supported by the information above?

Inference based CR question type

A. How big a nation’s GDP is directly related to the number of public works projects the nation commissions.

the argument does not co relates a nations GDP to public work projects ; in correct option

B. Argentina and India spent more money on infrastructure in 1980 than did Soviet Union. ; there is no clear information or data value given in the argument here where money spent details are given ; incorrect option

C. How much money a nation spends on infrastructure is directly related to the number of public works projects commissioned in that nation.

same as option A ; co relation between spending on infrastructure with projects is not mentioned in correct option

D. Both India and Argentina will soon surpass Soviet Union in the number of public works projects commissioned.

there is no clear evidence nor can we predict that both India & Argentina will surpass Soviet union in the number of projects ; in correct

E. Between 1958 and 1980, Soviet Union consistently spent a larger percentage of its GDP on infrastructure than did Argentina.

we know from the argument that Soviet Union spent 24% of GDP and Argentina spent 12 % so this can be inferred from the premise to be true

IMO ; option E is correct

The question is asking conclusion supported
A. There is no mention of GDP figures, hence we cannot say which ios huge
B. There is no mention of how much is GDP, so we have no idea what was spent is more or less
C. The calim is not found in the passage
D. It is a speculation but we can not say with certainity because we don't know their actual spending
E. Correct because 15 and 24% is greater than 12%

Right option is E

Opt A: Can't be concluded from limited information from the passage
Opt B: This can only be said when we know the GDP number. Passage talks only in percentage terms
Opt C: Can't conclude
Opt D: Can't conclude. Number of projects could be lower also even with larger allocation of fund.
Opt E: Can be concluded as given from passage. SU reached 24% to 15% during 1958 - 80 and Argentina reached 12% by 1980.

It is an inference question. We need to make sure that must be true.
Answer choice is E

Elimination
(A) If the public projects size are small, it cannot tell the nations GDP is big enough. Eliminate.
(B) They said they increased the percentage, but never said how much. Eliminate.
(C) Whether the nation spends more money on infrastructure will not give us the right inference. Eliminate.
(D) We do not know whether they will surpass or not. Eliminate
(E) Since Argentina spent 12% on 1980 and Soviet Union Spent 15% on 1980, they eventually spent more. Answer!

Another easy peasy lemon squeezy question.
Premise: The percentage of GDP spent by Soviet Union kept on declining from 1958 to 1980 from 24 percent to 15 percent respectively. and at the same time India and Argentina increased the percentage of their GDP's spent on infra to 20 and 12 percent respectively.
Approx conclusion: The percent of GDP spent buy Soviet Union was higher than the respective percents of GDP spent by India and Argentina individually.

We have no numbers to make a comparison in terms of the public works commissioned by either India or Argentina

Let us take a look at the options here:
A. We do not know the exact GDP of any nation and hence we cant conclude that a nations GDP is directly related to the public works the nation commissions. Ignore this option
B. We do not have exact figures on how much India and Argentina spent so scrap this option.
C. This option also talks about the figures of infra projects in comparison to the nations GDP . We have no answer for this in the premise. so cant conclude this. Ignore this option
D. We have no info on the number of public works in India and Argentina and hence we cant conclude that they will soon surpass the Soviet Union in number of public works commissioned.
E. We can infer from the premise that the Soviet Union consistently spent larger percentage of its GDP on infra works (24% and 15% in years 1958 and 1980) in comparison to Argentina which only spent 12% of its GDP on infra projects.

Option E is the right answer. Thank you and please support me on this answer.

Answer is (E).
A & C - no mathematical correlation.
B - no information on actual amounts.
D - future predictions not discussed.
E - Correct as the SU investment decline was steady from 24 to 15 which is still higher that 12%.

Conclusion is something which can be concluded given in the argument.
So IMO E is the correct ans as the arg mentions "During this period, when Soviet union's % was steadily declining, ARgentina inceased % to 12

A- Incorrect because nowhere mentioned relation between a big GDP & no of public works
B- Incorrect. We only know % not the actual money spent
C- Incorrect - we dont know if money spend in infra is directly proportional to no of public works
D-Incorrect- we dont know the future, if India & Argentina will surpass - out of scope

Option A : Way out of scope.
Option B : Classic Gmat trap, percentages vs number. We only know india and Argentina are spending 20% and 12% of their GDPs, but we donot know How big their GDPs are. Hence we cannot infer this.
Option C : Out of scope. nothing is mentioned about the number of public work projects.
Option D: This cannot be inferred as nothing is projected as such in the paragraph.
Option E : Yes. Argentina spent max of 12% of its GDP in 1980 which is still lower than Russia which stands at 15%. Hence this can be inferred.
Ans : Option E.

The two information would easily solve this question.
SPENDING OF Soviet Union PEAKED at 24% in 1958 and then STEADILY declined to 15% in 1980

Argentina had increased to 12% spent of GDP in 1980.

Option A - no information on number of projects of India and Argentina - ELIMINATED
Option B - We do not know the GDP amount so we cannot be sure for this
Option C- Again no information on number of public works of India and Argentina
Option D - No information on the future trend is given

Option E - Correctly depicts and now we would realize the answer is from those two information pieces discussed in the beginning of the explanation
