We need something that makes the honeymoon a good comparison for the business trip.

A weakens. She started with unusually low salinity. Eliminate
B is irrelevant. It talks about trip, not the aquarium. Eliminate
C is out of scope. It talks about refilling the tank, not leaving it unattended. Eliminate
D weakens. Faster evaporation makes the honeymoon a worse comparison. Eliminate
E sounds good imo. Some salt now crystallizes instead of staying dissolved, so salinity increases more slowly than before. Keep

Kara owns a saltwater aquarium where the level of salinity needs to be maintained in a narrow range. If unattended, the level of salinity can increase because the water evaporates and hence the concentration of salt in the remaining water increases. Kara is going on a business trip for 7 days and is hence assessing if she can leave the aquarium unattended for that period. Her basis of assessment is that when she went on her honeymoon for 9 days, she did not face any issues and hence figures that she can do that this time around as well, without harming the fish. We need to strengthen her reasoning for the conclusion.

A. If she brought down the salinity to a safe level while she was leaving for her honeymoon, she will need to ensure she does that this time as well. Then she can conclude that if the aquarium was fine for 9 days, it will be fine for 7 days also. She has to make the starting point comparable. Since we have no clue if she plans to do this or not, this option is not relevant.
C. The stress results from rapid salinity changes. Since we do not know whether the changes in salinity, while Kara is gone, will be rapid or gradual, we cannot assess anything from this fact.
D. If anything, this option weakens the argument. If the evaporation is faster, there are higher chances that the salinity levels might cross the safe level.

I was confused between B & E

B. I rejected B on the premise that every business trip can be different. The fact that the delay has not happened in the past is not a sure indicator that it will not happen in this trip as well.
E. This tells the current situation of the aquarium. Once the water evaporates, the salt that was mixed in that much water crystallizes and sticks to the walls of the aquarium. If, along with water, the salt is also going out of the equation, the level of salinity in the remaining water is never changing. Hence, this is stronger support for me as compared to option B. Hence, CORRECT ANSWER CHOICE.

E - This does strengthen the argument because it means that with water salt dissolved in water is also decreasing. but rate of water and salt crystallisation is not known to actually conclude anything. So may be

D - Weakens moving to a deserted place increases the chances of increased salinity as water evaporates faster

C - So kara will not be available to replenish th ewater while away on trip so this affect won't be there as water will evaporate every day resulting in increased salinity. But is it within range required is what we want to conclude with better reliable arguments

B - This suggests that kara return within planned date and time or early but this still doesn't confirm thatwithin planned off the aquarium salinity is within safe range

Kara left the tap unattended when she left for home but Salinity remained at safe levels even after 9 days. So for a 7 day business trip the aquarium tank must be safe to be left alone.
We need to find the strengthen option here
A: Extra water before honeymoon led to the safe level after honeymoon weakens by saying that there is an alternative reason for safe levels. Eliminate.
B. Business trips doesn't extend support the fact that the trip was still of 9 days and not the aquarium safe levels. Eliminate.

The stem tells us the following:
Kara has a salt water aquarium in which she has to maintain the level of salt in the water.. Salt is left behind when water evaporates from the tank so she has to keep adding water to maintain the salt level. She is going to leave for a week long business trip and she is contemplating if she can leave the tank alone. The last time when she went for her 9 day honeymoon, she left the tank alone. The salt levels did increase but were within the acceptable range when she returned. Hence, her conclusion is that as long as her business trip is not extended she can leave the tank unattended.

Let's understand what is happening here: Water evaporates i.e. water decreases, then the salt content increases. If this increase is beyond a safe limit, the fish die. Now if she goes away, there is no one to add water. But her conclusion is that since it did not happen during the last 9 day trip she had, it should not happen in the current business trip which is 1 week long. Thus we need to find an option that shows us definitively that the salt content won't increase. It could either be by increasing water content, decreasing salt content, or knowing that someone should be there to add water to maintain this salt content.

Option A: This is actually a weakener if you look at it carefully. This is telling us that the honeymoon example that her current conclusion is based on was actually a special case where she did something unusual (adding a lot of water), and not something that would happen normally. We are not given anything that she has done/is planning to do. Hence, we can safely eliminate this.

Option B: Just because an extension has not happened in the last 9 years, does not mean it will not happen this time as well. It is not assured. Hence, this does not strengthen the argument. Hence, we can eliminate this option.

Option C: It is good to know how Kara's fish react to rapidly changing salinity level of the water. However, it is completely irrelevant to our current discussion of whether tank can be left alone or not. Eliminate.

Option D: This weakens our conclusion. If in the newer desert area shows faster evaporation, that would mean that the salt level would increase much faster. That is exactly opposite of what we desire. Hence, eliminate.

Option E: This is exactly what we want! Since the excess salt crystallizes on the tank walls and it does not go back in the water, the salt content would never increase. This gives us somplete assurance that regardless of all other factors, the salt content in water will not increase. Hence, we can choose this option.

A. Irrelevant as it weakens rather than strengthens the argument since it is states that more water was added to decrease salinity levels before their honeymoon which might not be done during the business trip
B. Irrelevant as we need to check for the tank and fish safety with respect to the duration of the business trip and not verify if the business trip will remain within the 7 days or not.
C. Irrelevant as it doesent say anything about the salinity levels being in the range of an acceptable amount during the business trip
D. Irrelevant as it weakens rather than strengthens the argument since faster evaporation of water would lead to a faster increase in salinity compared to their honeymoon time which would be a problem

I think E is the best answer.

Reasoning:

We are looking for a strengthener that would support the conclusion that she would be OK to leave the tank unattended for a week-long trip without risk of endangering the fish due to the salinity levels.

A - We are given no indication that she would plan to repeat this action prior to leaving for her trip, and seeing as this could have been the factor which allowed the levels to be within the range, this would actually weaken the conclusion.

B - Tempting at first, but this assumption is already baked into the conclusion "as long as the business trip is not extended beyond the planned dates" - so evidence that the trip would not be longer than that actually does little to support the reasoning of the conclusion.

C - Irrelevant to supporting the given conclusion.

D - This weakens by suggesting that the evaporation effect would be even stronger and that the salinity levels are less likely to be within the accepted range.

E - So this is describing an effect; as water evaporates, instead of the salt concentration increasing due to remaining in the water, the salt crystalizes and also exits the water too. Since both variables are moving in the same direction and salt concentration is a percentage of overall volume, theoretically the salt concentration should remain constant. Therefore, this is the best answer.

Confused between B and E. My selection - Option B.

Option B - Strengthens the conclusion by strengthening the support for the conclusion - "As long as the business trip is not extended beyond the planned date".
Option E - Refers to the situation of the aquarium post her honeymoon trip. While it does highlight that the salinity levels wont increase as much since the aquarium will crystallize the salt as the water evaporates, but that situation exists even while she is yet to embark on her 10-day long business trip. If choice E is true, there is no need of the argument in the first place.

B The issue is the tank's condition, not Kara's travel history.

  • As water evaporates salinity level increases
  • Kara went to a nine-day honeymoon and when she came back salinity level was within range.
    So how is that possible ? We need to find an assumption so that we strengthen the conclusion
A.) Adding large amount of water would go beyond the "narrow" range of salinity level (False)
B.) It can be that none of her trips passed the planned duration and she was always on time but that does not prove how it stayed between the "narrow" range of salinity (False)
C.)Fish in the tank got stressed from rapidly changing levels of salinity. (It actually weakens) (False)
D.)If in the desert region water evaporates faster then salinity levels has to drop below appropriate range (False)
E.)If salt crystalizes and does not remain in the water when water evaporates then salinity level of water stays stable thanks to crystallization (Strengthens)
