@CulesRules I think you should apply a little bit of common sense and discretion. If you are 25 your total WE is probably not more than 5 years (probably less). In that case 5 months is a relatively long gap and you should mention it. I don't believe that the ad-com will hold it against you if you have a reasonable explanation for it.

@Ari123 I believe the essay format is the standard here. I dont know of anybody that has done it any other way.

Thanks boeinz & bsd_lover. I don't know whether my last question was clear enough.
My question was on extracurricular activities in the application data form: "Tell us about your main interests and activities outside of work". Is the essay format common approach for this question? Or should it be a standard list (as in US school's app) of the activities, number of hours of involvement, etc. thanks.

I have a question regarding the salary amounts I'm hoping someone can help me with. Some of my previous work experience is contract based work (daily rate) I have just made some calculations to extrapolate that to an annual salary. Would I need to explain this in the optional essay??

If I have an interesting story/aspect of my profile which is not presented anywhere, I would rather use it for the optional essay and give this explanation elsewhere during the process (ex:interview)

The HSBC loan guide says "Interest is variable over the duration of the loan and is currently charged at 2.75% above the Bank of
England sterling base rate". Does anyone know what is the current Bank of England sterling base rate ?

thanks prashok for the link. the one thing i would add to people considering this, please look at the historical rates as well. I've attached a chart with the rates since 1997 - please note that during the past 10 years the rate was always between 4% and 6% up until end of last year. the 0.5% is very attractive but it can only change in one direction and that is up. good luck with the decisions!

Yep, I took a look at the BoE rate history when deciding on loans, and that is indeed why I went with the Stafford loan (and of course, the USD-GBP rate was favorable earlier this year). The US government also subsidizes part of the interest accrued for the Stafford loan while in school (up to $8,500 of the loan balance each year). That said, at this point the Stafford is at 6.8% fixed, while HSBC is at 3.25%, so the spread is significant.

An ideal setup for US students could be to borrow Stafford to the maximum allowed ($20,500 per year), then HSBC for any remaining needs (which would also help hedge against currency fluctuations), but I don't know if anyone has done that yet. Apparently HSBC doesn't like it if you have other student loans being used for LBS.

vgeri's visual aid really says it all. the loan is quite cheap, but then, the criteria's difficulty for getting the loan should be in negative correlation to the %, hence at 8%, the loan should be easy to get with little to no guarantees; as to the .5%, I suspect the loan will be very difficult to acquire even with substantial guarantees.

hey all,

this question is for bsd_lover and anyone else who is familiar with the student body at LBS.

Being the fact that it's an international school with many students coming from countries where there is conscription, is there an active veterans community at LBS, and in particular, combat veterans from France, England, Australia, Israel, etc?

thanks. just trying to get info as i write my "clubs" essay and how I would fit.

lakai777 That is an excellent question. I have personally met folks who served in the US , French and British armies (folks from Israel, Germany, Singapore etc. do the mandatory service as well). The community is definitely there and very active, but not formalised as a club yet. One of my friends who is ex US special forces was in the process of starting up a veteran's club. This type of club is somewhat easier in the US where almost all veterans are ex US troops.

Prashok & bsd_lover,

I've got a question about the curriculum. I noticed that opportunities to take classes in pure statistical methods appear somewhat limited in the programme. There's a pre-session Business Statistics class in September of the first year (that can be waived out of), and then Time Series Analysis and Forecasting as a Management Science and Operations second year elective, but not much else.

For those who've got a more detailed interest in statistics for personal and professional edification, does the School, to your knowledge, permit students to take such classes outside the programme but within the University of London school system (such as at Imperial College or University College London)?

DoctorManhattan - to the best of my knowledge you won't be able to do this. There are electives that are taught by the UCL, but these electives are specified in the electives list. You are able to take language courses from King's college (and pay for them outside of the MBA), but not any other courses.
