I would take a waitlist at Texas considering the environment. I am also from Dallas and attended an admissions event locally. The adcom person mentioned that applications are up 20% this year at UT (anyone else hear this). I was shocked to hear this, because I read that applications are down nationally compared to the “record year” that was set last year. This person also mentioned that after your interview, a fresh pair of eyes looks at the application w/ the interview and makes the final decision. Considering that you passed the initial test by obtaining an interview and made the waitlist are positive IMO. You essentially have multiple decision makers liking what they have read.
You can’t really control the interview or even gauge it. I have interviewed with Alum and 2nd Year students at a few places so far and each has its pros/cons.
For your other schools I would maintain focus on the long term goal and definitely say exactly how the school will help achieve it. The Darden application is pretty easy in that there are only 2 essays. The questions are slightly different from other schools, but I suggest that you drive that focus on long term goals. Darden also has a close-knit alumni base, so get that point across in your essays.
Since UT doesn't utilize a round system, does that mean you can come off of the waitlist at anytime or is there a time frame?

I just took my GMAT today and I'm kind of dissapointed with it. I really want to get into McCombs and I don't know how necessary it is to retake the test. I'm already behind the group on applying!

640 GMAT (36 quant, 41 verbal). I'm a writing person, not a math person.
About two years work experience, editorial and marketing - specializing in non-profit arts
22 years old
3.6 GPA English, business and technical writing undergrad
I am very confident in my essays (especially since I'm a writer) and in my recommendations.
Should I just get my application in ASAP as is, or wait until January and try to knock my score up a little. I'm leaning towards applying as is and just crossing my fingers at this point!
