Just as an FYI to all of you, so none of you are surprised. The dean has indicated to students that it's expected that Fuqua's Business Week ranking is going to fall in the soon to be released rankings. This has been expected since the school has placed a greater emphasis on aspects other than strictly having very high GMAT's and is increasingly been focusing on international exposure and experience as well as those targeting social enterprise and other consequential careers. Of course the school is still very much seeking those interested in more traditional fields and from less exotic backgrounds. The consequence is that Fuqua isn't maxing out its GMAT, GPA, etc potential in building a class and also that more of our graduates, relative to other top ranked schools, are seeking careers in the developing world, entrepreneurship, and social enterprise. Consequently the average salary at graduation may be lower based on student's career aspirations. Still, be rest assured that the school is placing record numbers in highly sought after positions (MBB, banking, CPG, energy, health care, etc.). That doesn't make the school less competitive but it does make it less in line with the metrics used in the rankings. Take a look at last year's internship placements, earlier in this chain, and judge for yourself how the school is doing in the current economy.

Can someone who has knowledge or experience explain how the early action works? does duke really notify other schools? What if someone gets in and decides to go to another school for scholarship reasons? Is it truly "binding"?

I can give you my perspective, which doesn't mean I have inside knowledge, nor experience. When you apply EA you are agreeing to the terms of the EA application, which are that if you are admitted & decide to accept, that you pay the (large) deposit by December and that you then withdraw your applications from all other schools. They're not going to go around to other schools ratting you out (they wouldn't even know where to go), however, they are also expecting that you're going to be honest and ethical. To do what you are suggesting is disrespectful to other students that apply in the EA round and plan to follow the rules. If you were not sure where you wanted to go, then you should have followed the guidance and not applied EA.

Highhopes, I completely agree.

I don't see why people are confused about Early Action/Decision rounds. Schools, with Tuck being the exception, clearly state that you shouldn't apply to that round if said school isn't your top choice. It's somewhat upsetting to see so many people try to "game" the system, apply EA, and then wait to hear back from another school, while others who truly have that school as their #1 are dinged or waitlisted.

It boils down to ethics and integrity.

Marriages and engagements don't have four rounds that you can choose from.

Wouldn't marriage/engagements have more options to choose from/variables (the person, the time)? I think kig's point was people don't think they have the doubts when they make the decision that turns out later to be incorrect. Along those lines, the ring isn't on yet so now is the time to change course

Either way I blame both of you for giving me critical reasoning flashbacks/nightmares (just kidding...)

Any early action round applicants in here? Did anyone finish their interview yet?

Had my interview today. Interviewer was an Alum. Very conversational. Made me feel very comfortable. He was very passionate about "team fuqua" and spoke a lot on how an MBA from duke had impacted his life.
Interview went on for a little more than an hr.
Some of the questions that I remember:
1)family background,
2)why mba
3)why fuqua
4)why now
5)short term goals
6)Long term goals
7)What do you look in a leader
8)Who is your role model
9)A time when I failed
10) A time when my team stood by me
11) Family, Career, CSR, Hobbies - How do I rate them in my life.
12)Which schools have I applied to and why
13) Few hypothetical situations like what if duke waitlists me and xyz school accepts me..
14) What kind of leader am I?
15) Any questions for the interviewer.
