Hi there everyone
I just turned 34 and I'm looking to make a big career change. I have been teaching in Japan now for the past 7 years. Before teaching in Japan I worked in mortgage banking sales for 2 years in the US. I have a BS in marketing from a good state school and I'm completely fluent in Japanese. I would really like to use my language skills in international marketing. I have looked at schools like Georgetown, Univ of Washington, USC, Univ of South Carolina,Temple, and Hitotsubashi in Japan. I just started studying for my GMAT and haven't taken a practice test yet. Assuming I can get a good GMAT score, would it still be enough to get into a good program considering that I haven't done anything business related in the past 7 years? Is there still time to go back to school? Should I go back home and get a job for a couple of years and then apply? I would appreciate any helpful feedback.

I think the immediate situation looks challenging for an MBA. You’re on the older side for regular full-time MBA programs and your lack of business experience could be an issue – if not for the adcoms, for future employers. And part of what the adcom evaluates in reviewing your application is your post-MBA employability. If you can sell the adcom on how and why you’d be an attractive hire for your target firms and positions post-MBA, it will go a long way to making you a viable applicant. You should do a little research with those target firms to find out how they would view you – with your Japanese language and cultural fluency, your teaching experience (not business but does involve some relevant skills/abilities), plus MBA degree – would they consider hiring you?
Another option to consider, especially because of age, is to “plunge” into your chosen field for 2 years, establish a strong track record, then pursue an Executive MBA.
