Hey dreamchase,
Thanks for reaching out to me. I went to Anderson so especially qualified to handle this question!
To me, your question is rather convoluted and I'm having problems following it. To me, energy could include things like clean technology. Which is very different from the oil and gas industry. For the sake of your question I will assume that energy is analogous with oil and gas. Also, being strong in a certain subject matter area (like technology) does not exclude school from being strong within consulting. This is because there exists a field called technology consulting. I'm not sure if this is what you are trying to say, but to me it seemed that this is what you are saying. Moving on…
To answer your first question – UCLA does fare well within consulting. Of course, there are a lot of different flavors of consulting. This would include technology as well. Given UCLA's location, media and entertainment are heavily represented, and a lot of the consulting firms around the Los Angeles area have specific practices that attended to these types of clients.
To answer your second question – UCLA strong representation within consulting does not include the oil and gas industry. It's a function of the school's location. The simple fact is that other industries are much more dominant now in the LA basin. So UCLA Anderson is not a good choice for energy a.k.a. oil and gas.
If you were to write about wanting to go into the oil and gas industry on your Anderson essays, he would leave the admissions committee scratching their head slightly.
Respectfully,

I am hung up on whether to apply to UCLA or not. I am interested in Consulting with a focus on Energy/Oil&Gas post MBA.
All that is said about UCLA is in the domains of Tech, Entrepreneurship and Media. How does UCLA fare in Consulting ?
Is LA and around a good choice for energy ?
I talked to a current student at Anderson and he was not very enthusiastic about consulting and energy at UCLA campus.
Deadline is 24th Oct and I am still in double minds.
Any expert advice ?
