Unlike diamonds with other colors, it is very difficult to determine whether color of green diamonds is natural or treated.

1. Unlike diamonds with other colors, it is very difficult to determine whether color of green diamonds is natural or treated.
2. Unlike colors of other diamonds, color of green diamonds is very difficult to be determined to be natural or treated.
3. Unlike other diamonds, whether color of green diamonds is natural or treated is very difficult to determine.
4. It is very difficult, unlike that of other diamonds, to determine whether the color of Green diamonds is natural or treated.
5. Green diamonds are unlike other diamonds in that it is very difficult to determine whether their color is natural or treated.

I did consider option E to be a candidate but rejected because of the usage of "in that". Should it not be "in those" because we are talking about diamonds here?

Thank you in advance!

In that is used to begin a D.C. and starts an explanation a sort of X is different from Y because blah . Plus in those is unidiomatic

In option D, ‘unlike that ...’ , can ‘that’ refers to the difficult ?
My understanding from the sentence is:
Green diamonds are difficult to identify whereas for other diamonds it is not difficult

Difficult is an adjective. That refers to the most near noun or the head of noun phrase.
Noun phrase = noun + prepositional phrase.

So that cannot refer to difficult .

It is very difficult is a predicate .
Other examples:
It may be true that
It can hardly be said that...

...
Get me ?

Can you please explain why option E is correct?
In option E, "their" is clearly causing ambiguity.

it could refer to green diamonds as well as to diamonds.

Although B doesn't sound good, but wouldn't B would be a much better choice.

We can't automatically eliminate a pronoun just because it is potentially ambiguous. The meaning has to be noticeably unclear. Here, the modifier starting with "in that" is telling us how green diamonds differ from others, so the modifier has to be describing a trait of green diamonds. I can't say "I'm different from my cousins in that they are short." It needs to be something about me!

See
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/in that
or
https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/in+that

The phrase "in that" means "for the reason that" or "because".
It introduces an explanation and can be considered a subordinating conjunction.

Merriam-Webster example sentence:
The book is good, in that it's well written, but I didn't actually enjoy reading it.

TheFreeDictionary example sentence:
In that I can't make today's meeting, Shelly will go as my proxy.

Ok, it's because of "that" that we are referring to green diamonds.

Thanks :)
