Re: Until recently, corporate ideology in the United States has held that [#permalink]
1. The primary purpose of the passage is to

A. present evidence that resolves a contradiction in business theory
B. discuss reasons an accepted business pattern is changing
C. describe a theoretical model and a method whereby that model can be tested
D. argue that a traditional ideology deserves new attention
E. resolve two conflicting explanations for a Phenomenon

(A) is not correct because there is no contradiction being talked about in the passage and the author definitely does not present any example/evidence to resolve that contradiction.
(B) is the correct choice as it does talk about the changing business pattern in the industry and why this change has occurred. Along with this, the author also discusses the advantages of the new business pattern.
(C) No method to test any model has been discussed. Out of scope.
(D) The author does not argue that the traditional way of business needs to seen in a new light. He, on the contrary, seems to appreciate the new concept of small organizations.
(E) He does not resolve any conflicting explanations.

2. According to the passage, all of the following are examples of developments that helped promote the growth of large companies earlier in this century EXCEPT

A. the growth of the railroad industry
B. America’s westward expansion
C. an almost inexhaustible source of raw materials
D. the existence of an inexpensive source of labor
E. the development of an industry to produce Steel

Options (A), (B), (C), and (E) are stated clearly in paragraph 2.
Option (D) is stated clearly in paragraph 2. Refer to this sentence: "...plus a population boom that provided an ever-increasing demand for new products (although not a cheap source of labor) all coincided to encourage the growth of large companies."

3. The author's attitude toward the traditional view expressed in first para in bold lines can best be described as

A. scornful and denunciatory
B. dispirited and morose
C. critical but respectful
D. admiring and deferential
E. uncertain but interested

(A) is incorrect as the author is not scornful towards the traditional view.
(B) is also not correct because the author does not seem to be out of spirits or remorseful about the view.
(C) is incorrect as the author does not seem to be critical of the traditional view. He just presents information about the fact that this view is getting challenged. Nothing seems to suggest that he is critical of the view. He might very well be a supporter. We can't understand his viewpoint when he is stating facts.
(D) He may or may not admire the view; we don't know. This is not stated clearly.
(E) We can at best say that he is interested in the topic but no certain of his view. Thus, this is the correct choice.

4. It can be inferred from the passage that which of the following actions would be most consistent with the traditional ideology described in the passage?

A. Splitting a manufacturing company into several smaller divisions
B. Bringing a new product to market within a year
C. Creating a department to utilize new emerging technologies
D. Expanding an existing company in anticipation of growing demand
E. Cutting inventory and decreasing overhead

Most of the options here are definitely not what the traditional view would resonate with. For example, the traditional view would not :
-> split a manufacturing company into smaller divisions (even though the last paragraph of the passage states that they are making interdependent divisions), -> bring a new product to market within a year,
-> create a department to utilize new emerging technologies, and
-> cut inventory and decrease overhead

Thus, (D) is the correct answer.

5. According to the passage, to avoid the trap posed by “a potential dilemma” (Highlighted) emerging successful small companies will have to do which of the following?

A. Turn for advice to the industry analysts who earlier predicted the problems of large companies
B. Avoid taking paths that will make them too successful
C. Learn to embrace the traditional ideology of large corporations
D. Create small interconnected divisions rather than expanding in traditional ways
E. Hire successful CEOs from other firms

Turn to the final paragraph for the solution to this question. The author tells us that the new, small companies must turn to the bigger firms for advice - "which does not mean hire CEOs of successful firms". It simply means to adopt their method, which is clearly stated in option (D).

6. Which of the following best describes the organization of the first paragraph of the passage?

A. A conventional model is described and an alternative is introduced.
B. An assertion is made and a general supporting example is given.
C. Two contradictory points of view are presented and evaluated.
D. A historical overview is given to explain a phenomenon.
E. A new theory is described and then qualified.

This is a tricky question. Seems to me that the only way forward is POE, meaning trying to eliminate the 4 worst options to get to the correct one. Let's check each option one by one and determine correct grounds to eliminate them.
(A) uses the word 'described'. Now, described is used to explain something in detail. First of all, there is no model being talked about, just a view. Secondly, the first para graph does not describe it. It just outlines a view and talks about an alternative view. However, if we let go of these two minor problems, this might be our answer. Keep it and move forward.
(B) Again an assertion is definitely made that the view is changing. However, the can we say that the non-highlighted sentences in the first paragraph act as example? Not quite.
(C) These is definitely not the correct answer since the points of view are not evaluated in the first paragraph.
(D) No historical overview has been given to explain the shift in the point of view.
(E) Can we call a point of view a theory? Also, the new point of view is not qualified. The author gives away no such knowledge.

Even after spending a lot of time on this question, I'm still confused between two options - (A) and (B). But I guess I'll go with (A), because there is definitely no supporting example stated in the passage.

7. It can be inferred from the passage that small companies are better able to adapt to the new business climate due to which of the following factors?

I. Low overhead and inventory
II. The ability to predict when new products will become outmoded
III. The capacity to change quickly to meet new challenges

A. I only
B. II only
C. III only
D. I and III only
E. I, II and III

II is not stated in the passage, while, I and III are clearly mentioned in paragraph 3. Thus, option (D) is our correct choice.

1. The primary purpose of the passage is to

A. present evidence that resolves a contradiction in business theory
B. discuss reasons an accepted business pattern is changing Correct
C. describe a theoretical model and a method whereby that model can be tested
D. argue that a traditional ideology deserves new attention
E. resolve two conflicting explanations for a Phenomenon

Correct answer B
Explanation : It most clearly expresses the purpose of the passage. Author discusses the reasons for the change in the business pattern.
Option A is incorrect because there is no contradiction or a theoretical model or argument of any sort and neither does author presnet any conflicting explanations. He just discusses the changes in business patterns and the reasons for the same.

2. According to the passage, all of the following are examples of developments that helped promote the growth of large companies earlier in this century EXCEPT

A. the growth of the railroad industry
B. America’s westward expansion
C. an almost inexhaustible source of raw materials
D. the existence of an inexpensive source of labor
E. the development of an industry to produce Steel Correct

Correct Answer - E
Explanation - all of the options are mentioned in para2, last option is not mentioned, what is mentioned is: "the growth of the railroad and steel industries", implies that steel industries were there, but growth happened, not the development to produce steel.

A. scornful and denunciatory
B. dispirited and morose
C. critical but respectful Correct

A. Splitting a manufacturing company into several smaller divisions
B. Bringing a new product to market within a year

D. Expanding an existing company in anticipation of growing demand Correct
E. Cutting inventory and decreasing overhead

A. Turn for advice to the industry analysts who earlier predicted the problems of large companies
B. Avoid taking paths that will make them too successful
C. Learn to embrace the traditional ideology of large corporations
D. Create small interconnected divisions rather than expanding in traditional ways Correct
E. Hire successful CEOs from other firms

Correct Answer - D
Explanation - D is mentioned in the last lines of the passage: "small companies may look to the example of several CEOs of large corporations who have broken down their sprawling organizations into small, semi-independent divisions capable of surviving in today’s market-place."
Rest of the options are very clearly out of scope.

A. A conventional model is described and an alternative is introduced.
B. An assertion is made and a general supporting example is given.
C. Two contradictory points of view are presented and evaluated.

Correct Answer - D
