Sentence Structure

----Used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds,
a compound
----named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS),
-------------which was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure,
was the subject of a famous Internet hoax in the 1990s.

The sentence seems grammatically and logically correct.

POE

A. Used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, a compound named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure,
- CORRECT

B. A compound, which was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), and used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds,
- here "named" appears to be modifying "facial skin" or "prolonged exposure" - which does not make sense in either of the cases
- same issue is with "used"

C. Used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, a compound named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
- first modifier "used" and 2nd modifier "found" are appears to be modifying "a compound" - which makes sense but the connector between these two modifier is missing

D. A compound that was found with prolonged exposure to cause irritation of facial skin and was used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS),
- "Compound was found with prolonged exposure" - it's illogical
- modification by "named" - as highlighted in B

E. A compound, which it was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds
- which it was - relative pronoun and then a pronoun
- modification by "named" - as highlighted in B

Used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, a compound named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, was the subject of a famous Internet hoax in the 1990s.
There are modifiers for the noun, 'a compound' as below:
1. used in many detergents
2. named SLS
3. found to cause irritation

A. Used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, a compound named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure,
All 3 modifiers are modifying the noun 'a compound' correctly and their placement in the sentence is right. The correct answer choice is A.

B. A compound, which was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), and used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds,
Grammatically it may look ok, but the order of the list items is not in a sequence, making the sentence awkward. It would have been better (first name of the compound, followed by where it is used and finally the problem associated with) if the modifiers are mentioned in the right sequence. Eliminate

C. Used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, a compound named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
modifier 'Used in...suds' followed by another modifier, 'found to... exposure' is incorrect usage and not modifying a noun ('a compound'). Misplaced modifier problem. Eliminate

D. A compound that was found with prolonged exposure to cause irritation of facial skin and was used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS),
sud is named as SLS here due to misplaced modifier 'named SLS' which is modifying the nearest noun 'suds'. The intented meaning is lost. Eliminate

E. A compound, which it was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds missing comma here
the end of the modifier, 'used in many....suds' misses a comma. Pronoun, 'it' is unnecessary. Eliminate

A. Used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, a compound named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, -> We have right modifiers used and non underlined part also connected with the current structure. Let's keep it.

B. A compound, which was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), and used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, -> A compound named ....and used, was........this is not better than A. Let's drop it.

C. Used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, a compound named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) -> Modifier error. Incorrect.

D. A compound that was found with prolonged exposure to cause irritation of facial skin and was used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds, named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), -> "A compound that was found....." Incorrect.

E. A compound, which it was found to cause irritation of facial skin with prolonged exposure, named Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), used in many cleaning detergents and hygiene products to produce suds -> "it" is incorrect.

So, I think A. :)

Imo it should be A.

However, as a side note, if the two modifiers in option C were merged using the conjunction 'and' it would have been grammatically correct.
