Official Solution:

During the tenure of Steve Jobs, which was known for his dictatorial management style and for his innovative ventures, the growth of Apple Inc. exceeded any large technology company in the world.

A. which was known for his dictatorial management style and for his innovative ventures, the growth of Apple Inc. exceeded any.
B. known for his dictatorial management style and for his innovative ventures, the growth of Apple Inc. was exceeded by no other.
C. known for his dictatorial management style and for his innovative ventures, the growth of Apple Inc. exceeded that of any.
D. known for his dictatorial management style and for his innovative ventures, Apple Inc. exceeded any.
E. known for his dictatorial management style and for his innovative ventures, the growth of Apple Inc. exceeded that of any other

  1. The sentence illogically compares “the growth ….” with “any large technology company ...” logically, the growth of one company can only be compared to the growth of another. Moreover, the second term of the comparison must refer to "any other company," since Apple was obviously also a large technology company in US. The underlined portion of the sentence begins with a relative clause that describes a person, Steve Jobs. The relative pronoun "which" is incorrect, since "which" only introduces phrases that modify things.
  2. This choice draws an illogical comparison between the “the growth of Apple Inc.” and “no other city” and introduces the wordy passive construction “was exceeded.”
  3. This answer choice states that the “growth of Apple Inc.” was greater than “that of any company,” rather than “that of any other company,” thus illogically implying that the growth of Apple Inc. was greater than even the growth of Apple Inc. itself.
  4. This answer choice states that “ancient Apple Inc.” was greater than “any large Technology Company in the US,”rather than“any other large technology company in the US,” This illogically implies that the city exceeded itself. Also, by failing to mention the population as the parameter of comparison, this answer choice introduces ambiguity and fails to retain the intended meaning of the original sentence.
  5. Correct. This answer choice draws a logical comparison between “the growth of Apple Inc.” and “that of any other large technology company,". Moreover, it uses active voice and drops the wordy and incorrect construction “which was,” and preserves the intended meaning of the original sentence.

Answer: E

The explanation for choice B is incorrect. There is no "City" in the sentence. B is as good as option E. Please check.

Of course, there's no 'city' in the sentence but the sentence is still wrong. It compares 'the growth of Apple' with 'large tech company...'. :)

Where does the City in answer choices B and D come into play from? I am also a bit confused why there is the term population in choice D.

I think this is a high-quality question and the explanation isn't clear enough, please elaborate. The explanation of option (d) talks about some 'City' which is totally irrelevant. The sentence doesn't talk about any 'City'.
