In order to get at least 40 in verbal, how many questions I have to get correct out of 36? I know that the system is adaptive but still a rough number would be fine for me to estimate how much I have to improve more. As of now I am able to get 23-25 questions correct.

It's counterintuitive, but the algorithm doesn't actually take into account how many questions you get right. There's not a point at the end of the test where it says 'how many questions did this person get right overall?'. It really just looks at where you are after your last question. Here's a more in-depth analysis:

And here's a look at how it specifically affects Verbal:

Hi eswarchethu135,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. Your GMAT score is based on not only the number of questions you answer correct/incorrect, but also the difficulty of those questions, among other things. Thus, there is no way to tell you exactly how many verbal questions you must get correct to score a 40.

That being said, rather than spending time worrying about the GMAC algorithm, you really should focus on the things you can control, and the number one thing you can control is getting better at the GMAT. If you get to a point at which you can dominate the GMAT, the specifics of the scoring algorithm won't matter because you will to have the skills that you need to get an amazing score, right? You may find it helpful to read this article about
how to score a 700+ on the GMAT.

So, when is your GMAT? What is your score goal?

If you have any further questions, please reach out. Good luck!

Hi eswarchethu135,

The more appropriate question is actually "what type of skills do you need to develop so that you can consistently earn a V40+?" To that end, before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) How have you scored on EACH of your CATs/mocks (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
4) How have you scored on each of your Official GMATs?

Goals:
5) What is your goal score?
6) When are you planning to retake the GMAT?
7) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
8) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hello,

I have been preparing for GMAT since last 5 months and struggling with the improvement in my verbal score. I have studied MGMAT SC book and Power Score CR book, yet my score is constantly hanging between 27 and 32. I have practised almost 70% of OG and attempted hundreds of questions from GMAT Club Forum with a significant time in reviewing these questions. In addition to that, I also have a subscription to Magoosh and have completed 70% of the questions from the available question bank. My problem is that when I review my errors, I find that I already knew the concept but was unable to apply it during the exam. In all my mocks, one of three sections of verbal is heavily impacted- surprisingly, it is not the same every time.

I have my GMAT exam scheduled for 14.08.2023 and need to know what strategy should I follow in the last preparing days to increase my verbal score to at least 40. My target score is 740-750, and since I constantly score 49-50 in the quant section, verbal is the section in which I can improve.
Further, I would like to mention that, with a considerably slow speed, I am not a native speaker and that I can attempt only 32-33 questions in the given 65 minutes.
Score of last five tests is:
1) 680 , Q49, V32
2) 650, Q49, V28
3) 710, Q50, V36
4) 680, Q50, V31
5) 680, Q50, V31

I would highly appreciate the suggestions for the remaining days. :please:

Person below went from a V31 to a V40 in about 30 days on a retake. Although they took a bit of tutoring, they mention a variety of free resources/quick tips you can check out. Might be worth working with a study buddy who is really strong on Verbal. You could help them with Quant in exchange given your multiple Q50 mock scores.
