I used to always listen to music while working accounting problems but luckily I stopped. I know it isn't as fun, but I promise the music is a detriment to your studying. I pound powdered caffeine now to make the quant stuff more tolerable haha.

I like listening to Jazz. And anything without lyrics like instrumental. Lyrics distracts me. :D

If I listen to music while studying, it can't have lyrics or else I get distracted. Enya is still fine though.

I try not to listen to music that often while studying though, since we wont be able to listen to music while taking the exam.

i read a study about studying with music, unfortunately i cant find it to put a link here for it. but the gist of it was:

they did a study about the effects of different types of music while studying on the performance on the related tests. they com up with the results that the most effective music was baroque music, but with the caveat that it was playing while studying and while taking the test [ in this scenario the music actually stimulated better and deeper understanding while studying and the performance on the test]. however when they just played the music while studying and not when taking the test subjects didn't have improvement and small percentage did worst....

wish i could find the link...it is a very interesting study...if anyone knows about it please post the link....

Baroque music is supposed to have a calming effect on people. Some people listen to it while meditating because it supposedly stimulates the production of alpha waves in our brain. In the alpha state, the brain is much more receptive and thus allows the info to sink in... However, while taking the actual test people are not able to get into that alpha state. If somehow, they could get into the alpha state while taking the test, they would have definitely improved!

actually the interesting part of the research was the fact that: the high number of notes in baroque music make a deeper stimulation of your brain, i dont remember how they explained it, which leads to deeper and more focus understanding... however if you studied with music and tested without it it actually could have a little divers effect... but again if something works why fix it!!!!!

hmmmm... What do you think of this:
What if the person listened to music before and after each study session, would that lead to increased retention? If so, wouldn't the students perform better if they listened to some baroque just before the test?
