Recommender is running late - is it acceptable?

Question

Question to anyone - a good friend of mine is submitting an applicaiton to the Tuck right now. His recommender is not able to submit the LOR for a day or so (laptop blew up) - any suggestions?

Should he email the admissions? And explain the situation and apologize? 
Is it OK? (is there an assumption that a recommender is not the applicant and thus being a day late is somewhat understandable) or it is poorly reflecting on the applicant?
Is it the end? Meaning the applicant did not manage the applicaiton well?
Other thoughts/ideas?

Any input is greatly appreciated in this very sensitive situation...

 In most cases it is acceptable.  
What your friend needs to do, is to call the admissions office and see how late they will accept the recommendation. While they are not required to accept the recommendation late, most admissions committees have a policy of accepting Recommendations up to a week late.they understand that recommenders can sometimes lag.
additionally, your friend is not have to get this in writing from the admissions committee ( that they will accept it late) - a pretty much have an informal policy or they do not. if they say they do over the phone, then they do.

A few more thoughts -- to directly answer some of your other ancillary questions.

Call the admissions committee, do not e-mail them -- the turnaround time will be faster, especially since the deadline is today.
It really does not reflect poorly on the applicant, there is no need to apologize, shorter and faster the phone call is -- the better. **** happens and the admissions committee knows is. To a certain extent it is expected. Instead, making a lengthy excuse could actually reflect poorly on the applicant.

This is Tuck's official response regarding recommendation letters.

Given the importance we place on CSQs (letters of recommendation), we do not review any applications until we have received CSQs from both of the evaluators you listed in your application. If your CSQs are received after the deadline for submission, your application will not be considered until the next round. It is your responsibility to make sure that your evaluators are aware of the deadlines and to ensure that both CSQs have been submitted. If you would like
to make any changes to your list of evaluators, please notify the admissions office in writing.
