I am in the early stages of B-school preparation (haven't even taken a GMAT course yet) but I'm curious about my chances for getting into top schools (Top 10).
I've got a BS in physics and MS in MechE, both from UCLA with a 3.5 and 3.6 respectively. 3 years of WE as an engineer at a midsize technology company. I can get a great LoR from my manager and one from his boss as well (I might be able to swing a LoR from our GM or CTO, but it would be weaker than the other two).
My GPA is good but not great. What sort of GMAT score would I need to be considered at these schools, specifically to offset my low GPA? How do my chances look?

Your GPA is totally fine. And obviously a lot will depend on your GMAT, but you already know that. But to know where you stand, we need to know a lot more about your work experience, your volunteer work and your extra curriculars: do you have any notable leadership?? How many promotions have you gotten? what are your greatest achievements?

Hi,
Your profile looks good based on the information provided by you. The concerns that you have regarding your low GPA can certainly be offset by a good GMAT score. You already have a 5 years of work exp which is also important aspect of your application.
It is very easy to say that you should definitely target a score of 730 +, which is what the trend of the score that you can see other candidate scoring these days.
But saying that, we have to see which schools you are targeting and what are your career goals. We would also have to see the quality of the work done by you in the last 5 years and how the schools that you are targeting will make you reach you future goals. Schools see your application as a complete package. Even a score of 700+ would be sufficient for you if you are the right candidate for the school based on your work experience and extra circulars.
You need to get your complete profile evaluation done based on these factors and that would help you to understand about your chances in the targeted schools.
