I’m a 27 year old female (turn 28 during application). My work experience is weak, and I’m afraid it is going to keep me from getting in to a good school.

I graduated from college with a degree in Economics in 2009. My GPA was 3.6. I was involved in many clubs, student government, was a TA, worked part time through school, had an internship at a fortune500 company and studied abroad.

When I graduated I decided I wanted the opportunity to live overseas before beginning work. I taught English in Asia for 2 years and traveled. I came back and and found a job at a non-profit higher education association in DC as a coordinator. I have worked there for a little over 2 years now, will be 3 by the time of the application.

I took a practice GMAT through GMAC and scored 650 (i8, v38, q41) with absolutely no studying. I’m confident I can score at least a 700 after 2-3 months of studying and I’m aiming for a 730.

My top school is Georgetown with Maryland (Smith) as my back up. I’m not willing to leave the DC area so those seem to be my best choices. I plan to apply R1 this fall for both. My post MBA goal is management consulting with a focus on risk and/or international business.

So do I have a chance at Georgetown? Should I apply to more schools? How can I improve? Thanks for your help!

When I graduated I decided I wanted the opportunity to live overseas before beginning work. I taught English in Asia for 2 years and travelled. I came back and began looking for a job; I basically took the first job I was offered (after 4 months of searching) at a non-profit higher education association in DC as a coordinator. I have worked there for a little over 2 years now, will be 3 by the time of the application. I’ve spent the past year looking for a job that uses my economics degree, or is analysis related, with no luck, which is a big reason I’ve decided to apply to business school. I had always wanted to go to b-school eventually, but now I feel like I need to because I’m stuck. I can’t even get promoted at my current job unless someone quits in my department of 4 people (small company). I do volunteer on our company’s diversity committee and help plan events (like speakers). I don’t do any outside volunteer work.

You need to make the most of the experience you do have including living abroad and teaching for two years, organizing events for your current employer and accomplishing whatever you have accomplished. Raise your GMAT to the level you anticipate, implement the advice I just gave, and you have a good chance for Georgetown and Smith. You may also want to consider submitting an application to Johns Hopkins, but Georgetown is a better fit for your goals.
