Hi guys, I am from India and planning to do a MBA from a top 10 B-school in the US. Can you guys evaluate my profile and suggest me weather I have any real world chance of getting in a top university, or am I just wasting my time. My Profile:
-Age: 24
-Bachelor's in Commerce (GPA 5 out of 7)
-Gmat: 740
-Master's in Commerce (GPA 6.3 out of 7)
-CFA Level 3 cleared
-ACCA cleared
-Have 3 years of work experience in a finance firm
-Good recommendations from 2 of my seniors and one colleague
-Been doing social service for 2 years
-Extra Curriculars in Martial arts and Abacus (Don't know if these matter)
According to me, everything in my profile is good except my GPA which is 5 out of 7 or equivalent to 2.96 in the US. Will this low GPA hamper my chance for any ivy-league school inspite the rest of my profile? Can I do any courses to make my profile more attractive?
I really need help guys. I have to decide which colleges to apply to, and I am confused on weather or not I shoud just apply in the top 10. Are top 5 out of question for such low GPA? Is top 15 a more realistic goal?

Thanks for the post and list of your stats. While helpful, I really need more to point you in the right direction. 3 years in a finance firm is way too vague for anyone to be able to guide you. What company do you work at? What is your role? How well do you perform in that role?

Feel free to email me to discuss further. [email protected]

Best,
Scott

Viraj,

You have several good points in your profile. In fact, you seem to be one of the young rockstars top business schools like. There are certain expectations from Indian students and you seem to fulfill the most basic ones. If you are strategic about your target B-schools, you might even be able to get scholarships.

However, your challenge would lie in convincing the adcom about the quality of your less-than-average work experience, leadership potential, clarity and uniqueness of your career goals and overall maturity. All this can be conveyed through the several components of the application.

I work with several Indian applicants, so if you want to talk, email me at [email protected].

Good luck!

Hi Viraj,

You seem to have a few good things on your profile. I do need some more details to ascertain how strong your candidacy could be.

I do believe a top 10 is stretching it too much though. Call us, and we can have a more comprehensive discussion. The important thing, as Jon says, is to find schools that you fit well with, so that you will have a good experience at school, and a smooth transition to your chosen post-MBA career.

Regards,
Karthik
