I am officially working as a Business Analyst for my family-owned business conglomerate. Have formidable experiences in Consumer Products as well as Retail. Have grown up in a Business Environment and have successfully set up a new vertical for the company . Also co-founded 2 new startups, which are yet to get their full bloom.

Global Exposures Have travelled for work to other Asian countries and parts of Europe. Planning to get an LOR from a foreign national with whom I have worked with for a substantial amount of time.

Volunteering: Occasionally, engaged in some form of volunteering for others especially in the Rural and less educated spectrum of the society, although I have not worked with any big brands per se. And I devote time towards the elderly as well, helping them to understand the advents of technology.


Undergrad: Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting, and Finance ( Not sure how the Percentage would be ranked, the University isn't known for giving high grades.Score was about 60%)

Courses beyond Undergrad: Company Secretary and Chartered Accountancy (equivalent to US CPA) - considered one of the most competetive courses in India.
I was doing the courses simultaneously along with my undergraduation.

GMAT: 730 (Q49 v41) [Estimated]

Interested: Want to transition into Strategic Consulting for Social Enterprises which are effectively in the small and medium sector. I have a natural empathy for things that are sometimes neglected and want to devote my proficient skills into that with a global perspective in mind.

Do you think I can package my blunt desire of helping social enterprises through consulting in a meaningful manner and aim for the top MBA schools?

A Global Experience and Diversity are my priorities.

Hi Aman, I think it might be a little bit ambitious. I like the way you laid out your experience and high points here.

But what from what I'm gathering there's really no way to connect the dots between your past and your future with that career goal.

And that presents a serious risk in the eyes of career services. It's generally advisable for you to switch the function or the industry but not both.

I was able to pull it off but it was only by complete happenstance and making an emotional appeal to VP of marketing.

You need to have something of value to the employer, in addition to the MBA, and this means either experience in that same type of job, or experience in the industry are seeking to work in.

frame it as a long-term goal after Gathering some Consulting experience or social Enterprise experience in another domain.

To maximize your chances of admission, make sure that you have a way to build a bridge from your past your future so it doesn't seem like a totally random move.

AND they can see recruiters taking you off your hands, so that you won't be a burden on their employment statistics and rankings.

If an entrepreneur or a candidate having a family-business background plans to move into the consulting industry, how would the AdComs assess the candidate's Recruitment Potential?

This is a little bit of an exception in some ways, because it is possible to sort of start a whole new career in this regard without having it connect the whole lot of dots with the past. That said if you were to show that you have focus on consulting projects that relate to your past, or working for a consulting firms that specialize in areas in which you have experience, that would be ideal. When I say pass, I don't necessarily mean the same industry you worked in, but that you just have some kind of exposure experience datapoint volunteer experience something.

However mainly in the situation they will be looking for your overall Fitness as a candidate in management consulting. For example if you're going for mbb, do you have a GMAT of 720 Plus. Have you been working on case interviews? You will want to really get across that you're serious about this and that you've been doing your homework and research. Pick up a copy of Case in Point. Often candidates site management consulting as the career goal and it gets to be a little bit suspicious because so many people do it. Just make sure to show them that you have done your research you know what it takes to get where you need to be, and you know about the resources available at the school that can help you get there.

I do recommend that you apply to Kellogg, they have excellent strengths in both Consulting and family business. And the growth of scaling learning pathway which would be helpful to an entrepreneur. Wharton, also a good choice.

I am not aware of the rank as well. If I try to explain it in a simple manner, my aim during my undergrad was simply to be academically successful in the COMPANY SECRETARYSHIP and CHARTERED ACCOUNTANCY Courses, which have an average success rate of less than 10%. Over that, call it an unfortunate perception or not, the Bachelor of Commerce Degree in India(especially in that university) isn't adequately respected to be a gauge of someone's academic prowess.

I think that depending on how you present in your application, you can certainly make this case. Giving specific examples of why this matters to you and showing some evidence of this in the past is most helpful- I don't necessarily see that in this narrative here. Schools like Booth, Tuck and Fuqua come to mind as programs with very strong social enterprise programs.

To illustrate the entire picture, my family business is known to create employment opportunities for the people who wouldn't otherwise be employable. We also employ a certain number of disabled(I like to call it as Special) employees. So, even though my business isn't doing great in numbers in certain divisions, the management is content with the social cause we are engaged in. Of course, that wouldn't entirely qualify my business to be a Social Enterprise , but during my tenure in the business, I have partnered and worked with numerous small and medium businesses and realised that there exist lacunae in those businesses when it comes to benefitting from a high-skilled technical person or consultant.

So, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity for me to engage in Consulting for Social Enterprises, given my strong technical finance skills. And since my vision has been Global through my past exposure and experiences, the Global MBA would be the perfect platform for me.

Hope I could clarify myself. Do you think if I can work along the same structure I can put up competitive essays for the Top Business Schools?

This helps to clarify and yes- if you explain more about what your family business does- it sounds very much like a social enterprise and you can leverage this even by sharing how you can help your classmates do this kind of work- so getting your clarification makes me more positive about your ability to shine in competitive programs- also look into top 15-25 programs too as there are some gems there too... Kenan-Flagler, Indiana to name a few- and your odds of getting funding go up in that tier.

@AmanKidCACS- I thank you for the chance to learn more about you- and I do think it will be in the telling of how you have created something unique with creating jobs for special needs employees and if you explain this well, you may gain the most traction in this MBA admissions process. The other thing I'd suggest is that you seek opportunities within business school to do some experiential learning to get some of the consulting experience you seek. UNC Kenan-Flagler has a STAR program that matches students with consulting projects which can be very useful in making a successful consulting transition. And both Kenan-Flagler and Kellogg have excellent family business resources that could be useful. As I mentioned, when I take an interest in someone I keep thinking about resources that could be helpful for them in making a transition to B school and future career goals... Was on the site today and thought of you and wanted to pass along a bit more insight..
