Consider the following points MBAmuscat2018:
  1. The work profile contours sound good. However, it'll be important to understand the actual nature of your work (what desk/role, captive/front office etc) as well as impact delivered. Just being part of those big brands is great, but eventually its 'your' work that matters. So do share on how that stands out - there are a ton of folks from those brands vying for a place in top schools. Think about how you'll differentiate against those.
  2. From arts background to banking looks to be good story in itself. It will be important to know the actual college name to better understand pedigree. Given your GPA, the GMAT may make the overall academic arc just about or slightly above average. That may be difficult to fly given the top league schools you are targeting. You should definitely think of a retake and push harder. Work with a test-prep team if that helps.
  3. The ECs and volunteer efforts sound adequate. Do try to bring out the quantified impact that the csr efforts have had due to your presence.

Hope this helps some.

Cheers,

Hello and thanks for the time taken to go through my profile!

At my first job I was part of operations (middle office) and at my second I’m in a business development role (front office)

I am definitely leaning towards retaking the GMAT. My only concern is that if I retake it and by some really bad luck get a lower score, will the schools consider the 710 score? Also, should I cancel this and retake or just go for the retake?

I plan to highlight my CSR Initiatives and sports merits in my essays. I have also learnt the western classical piano and Indian classical dance.

My mother also has her own company (corporate gifts and currently one of the biggest in the country it’s based) and I work in the company (along with my full-time job) in marketing and client service. This helps me hone my entrepreunership skills as well, I’ve been working with her for close to 5 years now. I plan to highlight this in my essays as well.

Let me know your thoughts please

Hi,

I just gave my GMAT today and scored 710 (Q46, V41, IR 5). Now I’m faced with the huge dilemma of whether I should give the GMAT again, as my Quant score is a little low. Would appreciate any advice on this matter!

Some background about me:

Target schools: Columbia, Indian School of Business, Cambridge Judge, Wharton, INSEAD, Stanford

I’m a 24 year old female with 3 years of work experience in 2 of the top investment banks (think Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPM).
I graduated with an arts degree from one the top arts colleges in India.

GPA: 3.5 / 4

As for extra curriculars, I have represented my school in National tennis and swimming competitions. I hold a scuba diving certification and have written several articles for my city’s newspaper.
I am also very actively involved in community service and currently part of my company’s corporate social responsibility committee.

That’s a brief about me. There are other extra curriculars but these are the most relevant ones.
All this taken into consideration, do you think I should write the GMAT again in hopes of raising my Quant score? The maximum I can get in Quant based on my mock tests is Q49.

Please let me know your thoughts! Very very confused and dejected at the moment. Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Hi MBAmuscat2018,

Thanks for posting here.

Definitely, a strong overall profile with professional experience at top-notch firms and fine extra-curricular activities. A set of essays where your strengths are well-represented and your career goals logically drawn could help build a strong case for you.

While 710 works for schools such as an ISB or Cambridge Judge, the same would fall under the average for the top US programs that you are looking at, particularly because you belong to an overrepresented pool and do not have a differentiated profile. Hence, in case you wish to apply to the top US schools that you have mentioned, a GMAT retake is highly recommended. In any case, a better score will also help improve your chances at ISB! :-)

Hope this helped.

All the best!

Hello!

Yes, definitely thinking of giving the GMAT again, just worried if the score is lower than this one.

Thanks for your advice though!

This is what we say on the score cancellation dilemma; read here. Dont be afraid of trying. Schools don't really care about the number of attempts so even if you score lower, won't hamper in any way.

The BD role sounds interesting - will have to be fleshed out well though and detailed out in terms of the transition; connect the dots basically.

The part-time bit looks pretty good - definitely leverage that.

All the best.

Cheers,
