Hey guys,

I'm looking for some advice on which schools I should apply to given my profile.

Age - 27 Male

Education Background
-B.S. in STEM field (3.0, immaturity/focus on sports) from top state school (Think UNC, UVA, University of Texas)
-M.S. in humanities field (3.86) from top non-ivy private school

GMAT - 780 (Q51, V46)

Undergrad Extracurricular Activity
-Varsity athlete (team captain)
-A few professional societies
-Fraternity with some minor leadership roles
-Active in local church

Post-Grad Extracurricular Activity
-Olympic trials/olympic alternate
-Youth sports coach
-Tutor to underprivileged kids
-Active in local church
-Served on two non-profit boards

Work Experience
Year 1 - Speaking/Ambassador role at University (Focus was still on sports)
Years 2-3 Executive assistant to nationally known and respected President/CEO
Years 4-6 Founder & CEO of startup (just sold for 60MM)

Additional Work Experience
Co-Founder of medium sized cattle ranch (my co-founder now runs it full-time. I just helped in early stages)
Captain in the US Army Reserves

Short-Term Post-MBA Goal
-Three options (I will tighten this up for the applications)
    1. Starting another company with friends from b school
    2. Consulting
    3. Tech

Target Schools
-Stanford/Harvard/Booth (Stretch?)
-Tuck/Haas/Yale (Target?)
-Darden/Ross/McCombs (Safe?)

Your list looks strong relative to (a) an interesting, diverse background, including military, sports, and founder experience and (b) strong quants. Post-MBA narrative will need to be much tighter.

If consulting and tech are on your post-school targets, you might consider Wharton or Kellogg within stretch / target. Ross is probably more in target than safe bucket. Why Yale on the list?

Hi bschoolhopeful,

I believe that you should be able to close within the M7. So yes, your list is mostly right.

It will depend on the development of your story, and the execution of your essays as well - please feel free to get in touch with us using the link below, if you believe that you would require help with those aspects.

Best,
Karthik

Hi bschoolhopefull!

Thank you for posting! As you already know, you have a very strong profile on paper and have significant accomplishments, both in your career and in life.

The question I have circles around Y1-Y3 of your work experience. What was the bridge which helped you go from your work as an executive assistant to starting your own company and sucessfully executing a sale? If you can effectively tell the adcoms a story, beginning with your college experiences and taking them through your development as an entreprenuer (and filter out what is important versus what isn't), I think you have a great chance at the schools listed and will be in contention at your reaches.

I would also focus on the "Why MBA" and "Why Now" parts of your application, as you will need to have clear short and long-term post-MBA goals. You don't want adcoms to think you are coming for a vacation after selling your company but rather to develop skills you feel are lacking and utilize your experiences and expertise to drive the sucess of a new endeavor.

Best of luck with the application process and please let us know if you would like to continue the coversation to discuss your profile in more depth.

Regards,

Personal MBA Coach

Hi bschoolhopefull,

You do have a strong profile in place; the GMAT will help cover up for the low GPA, to a large extent.

We are hopeful you will be able to make it to the M7 (of course, depending on the kind of essays you are able to put forth and how well the essays represent your overall candidature). Do address the low GPA at an appropriate point in your essays.

With regard to the schools, applying to a balanced portfolio is recommended; the choice would eventually depend on what you narrow down as your career goals (remember, the sync is important).

All the best! :-)
