First of all, This probably will not harm you if you have a high GMAT score. (for Indians, high GMAT is essential anyways, more than just assuring the adcom you can do math but to compete in your profile group) I would mention this in the optional essays if you actually have a good explanation, not something like the dog ate my homework. What I'm saying is if you had some type of illness or you had some type of situation that will make them feel empathetic towards you then go for it but if you just engaged in a lot of beer drinking and missed a lot of class then I would leave that out clearly that's not going to help your case LOL

I'm a Rutgers applicant with over 7 years' work experience and an average undergraduate score. Should I mention my average GPA in the optional essay?

Hello nkumar11,

This is something that is written in stone and you cannot change. If you have a GPA below the average class statistics. The optional essay can be a good place to address this and give some real reasons that affected your performance. You can also use an optional essay to tell the Adcom what changes you made yourself to make up for your lower GPA. Taking expertise help in crafting an optional essay would be a better choice for quality output.
