I am a Chartered Accountant. Indian Male 28. I have 6+ years of work experience across Audit and Consulting and Financial controllership. I am trying for an MBA preferably in the top 10 B-Schools in the US, and maybe the top non-US schools like INSEAD, HEC, LBS etc. The purpose is mainly to equip myself for senior leadership positions and to broaden my sphere into other financial areas (PE, IB). I am currently planning for applications during the January 2025 round.
I gave my official GMAT yesterday after around 2.5 months of self-prep, got a score of 665 (93rd percentile).Quant - 84 (85th percentile)Verbal - 81 (67th percentile)DI - 84 (97th percentile)I am contemplating more to give another shot in the next 15-20 days to increase it to 705 +. My main themes of errors that i intend to correct in my next attempt are1. I ended up answering a couple of medium to easy Quant questions wrong initially, time boxed it and corrected them at the end. This may have impacted my Quant percentile as i only got 2 questions incorrect in total, which i knew were hard for me2. Totally messed up Verbal as in all my mocks, I got 85+ percentile, so will have to strategize differently and take more practice My questions are- Assuming i take my second test towards end of November, would 1 to 1.5 months be sufficient to prepare essays and applications for say 5 to 7 universities? I am taking the help of an admission consultant btw.
- Is it realistic to aim for 40 point increase for my next attempt?
- Would be interested in your views on if i should apply maybe with the present score or go for the second attempt and submit the best score,
- Given the current economic climate, i feel US is kind of back in action so looks great to apply (downside is competition from number of applications). The reason I am not considering India is because the top MBA programs here are dominated by ppl with mostly under 3 to 4 years of experience, so not very useful given my motivations behind MBA. I am a bit wary of Europe though, especially London's economy is not particularly looking bright at the moment. Any views / thoughts here would be highly appreciated.
Thank you! Hey
Venu01298 ,
I hope all is well.
Your profile looks good! Your current GMAT score of 665 is also good but a bit on the lower end for top U.S. and European schools, especially with your aim to move into PE or IB. Retaking the GMAT for a 700+ score seems definitely achievable, and a focused approach, fixing quant pacing issues and strengthening verbal strategies should help. With a higher score, your chances at top schools improve significantly. If you are planning to apply in January, 1 to 1.5 months is tight but manageable, especially with expert guidance. Prioritize impactful storytelling in your essays to highlight leadership, results, and how you’ll leverage an MBA to pivot into finance.
U.S. schools like Wharton, Booth, and Columbia fit well with your goals, as do INSEAD and HEC Paris in Europe. Don’t let economic news deter you, the best way would be to connect with most of the alumni to gather the required information, top European programs still offer solid finance pathways.
Focus on your GMAT prep, present a compelling story, and you’ll be well on your way. Good luck! What’s going to matter most in your application is how you connect the experiential dots and build a great story to stand out from other applicants in the pool.
