A lot will depend on which country you are based and where you are considering studying for the MBA—in domestic markets or internationally. Hoping onto a senior management role is not a reason that will fly well with most international adcom. Your why MBA/why now will be critical, besides alleviating concerns about your ability to deal with the academic rigor of an MBA education. While a strong GMAT/GRE score will help, it remains a fact that if you are wanting to pivot from your current career direction, then you will have dependency on an internship, which is possible only in a 2Y MBA program. And it is also true that with your tenured experience, most 2Y programs will push you to their 1Y program, if at all.

The option to pursue an executive MBA in your home country is always available with you.

Hi All,

I need guidance on pursuing MBA and will that be a good choice considering my below profile ->

  • Current Experience & Age -> 12 years Experienced IT professional at 35 years of Age.
  • Work Profile -> Currently Employed as Quality Engineering Architect , a Technical Profile for monitoring the Automation Ecosystem & providing the solutions for Automation Testing.
  • Education -> I have done Bachelors of Engineering in Industrial & Production Engineering with 7.22 CGPA (10 Grading Scale). I don't have any major stints at Extra Curricular activities.
  • Reason of doing MBA -> I want to hop to a higher management role in business side. Currently I just have experience in technical roles and have managed teams at functional level. If I continue with my current profile it would be lot more years to get those roles in business side. Also I feel saturated financially in my current profile with very less chances of growth. So I am seeing MBA as a probable option for taking my career into new direction.

  • Family Background -> I am married but no kids as of now.

  • Financial Concerns -> I would need financial assistance like education loan to support my MBA so I am looking for colleges which can provides very generous amount of scholarships.

  • GMAT Status -> I have given GMAT 4 years back , got 450 score but did not accept it. I could not prepare well due to some personal issues.

Please let me know is MBA the right choice for enhancing my career and what are the colleges I should aim for 1 year MBA with respective GMAT score.
Hi grvtwr18,

Given your 12 years of experience in IT, particularly in a technical role, pursuing an MBA can be a strategic move to transition into a higher management role. However, it's crucial to consider the following factors:

Strengths:
Significant Work Experience: Your 12 years of experience in IT, especially in a technical leadership role, is a strong asset.
Strong Academic Foundation: Your engineering degree from a reputed institution demonstrates your technical abilities and problem-solving skills.

Challenges:
Age Factor: While age is not a significant barrier, it's important to consider how your age might impact your career trajectory and the expectations of potential employers.
GMAT Score: A score of 450 may not be competitive for top-tier MBA programs. Improving your GMAT score significantly can enhance your chances of admission.
Financial Constraints: Your financial situation is a crucial factor to consider when selecting a program.

By carefully considering these factors and taking proactive steps, you can increase your chances of admission to a top-tier MBA program that aligns with your career goals. By combining a strong application, a higher score, and expert guidance from The Red Pen, you can increase your chances of gaining admission to your dream MBA program. Dear grvtwr18,

Considering you are an Indian and based out of India, I would recommend you to pursue the ISB PGP Pro Program. Alternatively, if you can get a 635+ score in GMAT FE (or GRE Equivalent), you can also apply to programs such as IMD Switzerland, Kellogg 1 Year Accelerated MBA program etc.

Do note that doing a global Exec MBA, which is typically part time in nature won't add a lot of value to you since you won't get dedicated recruitment support or Visa assistance in those programs and as an Indian applicant, you wont be able to derive ROI.

I am an ISB alum, CO15, and have been guiding applicants for the last 8+ years. Feel free to reach out in case you seek professional assistance to navigate the MBA Admissions journey.

Cheers and Best of Luck !!
