Profile Review: Military Officer, 2.92 EE GPA / 3.90 MS

Hi everyone, looking for a candid MBA profile review.

Profile:  Early 30s male, American military officer with ~6 years of leadership experience. Roles have included leading teams, managing operations, coordinating across stakeholders, briefing senior leaders, and improving processes/accountability in high-pressure environments. International experience: 1 year in Korea.

Education:  B.S. Electrical Engineering from a regional public/non-target university, 2.92 GPA. M.S. Engineering Management from a reputable public STEM/engineering university, 3.90 GPA. PMP certified, plus additional professional certifications.

Background:  URM, First-generation American, first-generation college graduate, first-generation military officer. Working-class immigrant family background.

Goals:  Short-term: management consulting, ideally MBB or top-tier strategy consulting. Long-term: strategy, operations, or executive leadership in tech, defense tech, or another high-impact industry. Geographic preference is Southern California.

Targets:  UCLA, USC, Booth, Kellogg, Tuck, MIT Sloan, and Stanford GSB as a reach.

GMAT:  Currently preparing. Would appreciate feedback by GMAT Focus score bands: 615, 635, 655+.

Main concern:  2.92 undergrad GPA, though in electrical engineering. Hoping the 3.90 master’s GPA, engineering/quant background, PMP, professional experience, and military leadership help offset it.

Would appreciate honest feedback on competitiveness, school list, and score targets.

As the GMAT test is still a work in progress, aim for a higher score, closer to 695+. That would help in showing an impressive academic arc. The graduate GPA of 3.90 will further bolster this. The rest of your experiences- professional, leadership, community impact fall in separate categories and all elements of your profile need to be strong in their own capacity+.

Your goals look well aligned with your military career. The international experience is a definite plus as is your personal story of being first gen- especially if you had to struggle because of this and still achieve the best for yourself. B-schools like to hear personality shaping stories about grit and resilience as they show an applicants character, value system and achievements.

It will be easier to suggest b-schools after your GMAT score is available. I can't fault the current list. If you want to add names, I would include Darden and Fuqua.

Your military leadership, URM status, and first-generation narrative provide a strong foundation. The 3.90 MS GPA may help mitigate the 2.92 undergrad GPA, especially since Electrical Engineering is notoriously rigorous. However, M7 schools will still view a sub-3.0 mark as a significant hurdle.

- 615-635 Band: You are competitive for your Southern California targets (USC, UCLA) given your stellar background.

- 655+ Band: This score is absolutely critical if you want a realistic shot at Booth, Kellogg, Tuck, MIT, or Stanford.

Your profile is stronger than it may initially appear. While a 2.92 GPA is below the average for M7 schools, admissions committees will also consider the rigor of Electrical Engineering, your 3.90 MS GPA, military leadership, and quantitative background. A 655+ GMAT Focus score would significantly strengthen your academic profile for Booth, Kellogg, MIT Sloan, and Stanford, while 635+ keeps UCLA Anderson and USC Marshall well within reach.

One point many applicants miss is that military candidates are evaluated against other veterans. Hence, your application should emphasize measurable leadership impact, cross-functional collaboration, and process improvements rather than just rank or responsibilities.

Given your low grad GPA, please do everything you can to kill the GMAT if you want an M7 school.
You said 6 years of leadership, but in your early 30s. If that means you have more years of WE, please list and detail those as well. 
Your background is an outstanding strength (but please understand ONE very strong pillar does not hold a ceiling by itslef). It is important therefore to bring out the real stories of the low GPA without trying to justify anything
Your Goals (in your current form) show no links from your past. Without a demonstrable interest in Consulting, this seems to be wishful thinking. Ensure therefore to SHOW (not just tell) WHY the AdCom should believe you would be able to achieve your goals.

You already closed that gap with the 3.90 masters, and the real open variable here is the score bands you listed, which are set a notch too low for this list.

- A 3.90 in engineering management from a strong STEM school is exactly what adcoms want when an undergrad number is dated: recent, quantitative, clearly upward. Give it one factual paragraph in the optional essay and stop relitigating it.
- Recalibrate the GMAT targets. A Focus 655 still sits under the 675 to 685 zone where M7 medians cluster, and precisely because the 2.92 exists, the test is your one clean proof of quant readiness. Treat 675+ as the Booth, Kellogg, Sloan and GSB number, 655 as the floor there, and 615 to 635 as UCLA and USC territory.
- One thing you did not ask: MBB hiring into Southern California. UCLA and USC feed the LA offices well and recruit veterans actively, but if you want optionality into tech and defense tech nationally, the M7 names earn their premium.

Take a full official Focus mock this week; the list splits cleanly around that result. The leadership record and first-generation arc are genuine assets, and we are glad to look at specifics if that would help.

ReflectionMan - adding to the pointers above, we'd suggest aiming for a 685-695+ on the GMAT, with a balanced sectional split. Building an additional transcript would also help e.g. pursuing courses such as MBAMath, HBSCore, etc. (whichever are most relevant - this would require a deeper discussion) . On the application and interviews, it'd be crucial to have a strong narrative covering your professional/ personal experiences, career goals, why MBA and why now.
