Hi Paul,
Below are my details. I would love to hear your expert opinions.
Age: 31 (White, male, US citizen from NY, if that matters)
Gmat: 750 (46V, 47Q / 5.0 AWA)
GPA: 3.3
Work: 7 years as a quality engineer for a large manufacturer
Recommendations: very good
I’m primarily applying to the part time programs of Fordham, Baruch and NYU, with NYU being my top choice.
My work is not as boring as it seems by the plain description. I work in the corporate office and deal with the company’s top issues. It’s more management of our 16 plants than engineering. There is a lot of essay material. Additionally, there is a natural progression to vice president in my current role, for which I am being groomed (company will sponsor my MBA). In fact, this is a strong reason for getting an MBA.
Two things that worry me. First is my age. Is 31 old enough to be considered a negative, or is it within the normal realm of MBA apps?
The second thing is, due to personal and family concerns, I was not able to complete my undergraduate degree until very recently (2008). I received an AS in 2004 after attending a public college part time for 4 years (GPA: 2.9). In 2007 I entered a decent mid tier BS program that allowed me to transfer my AS in for 70 credits. I recently finished this (GPA: 4.0). I believe my combined GPA ends up being 3.3 – 3.4.
I’ve basically worked full time and went to school part time for my entire undergraduate studies, with a few notable interruptions. This seems radically different than the traditional MBA apps education path. How harshly will the admissions committee view this?
Thank you in advance for any input. I look forward to reading it!
p.s. I bought your book months ago and it has served as an excellent guide to understanding the application process. Anything that helps take away the mystery is definitely money well spent…
