Hi everyone, I recently found this website and I hope you all will be willing to give me some advice.
My Profile - I am a female minority (African-American, though I do not have US citizenship) and a rising junior at a Top 5 liberal arts college in the northeast. So far, my focus has mostly been on nonprofit, and I have a lot of "teaching" experience. I've always had a strong interest in healthcare and though I do not plan to follow clinical medicine, I am interested in healthcare administration.
I will graduate in May 2010 with a BA in Sociology and a minor in Economics.
I had one BAD semester during my college career so far, which caused my
GPA to significantly drop. Right now, however, it is a 3.33. I still have 2 years to raise my GPA and hope to make it to a 3.5 in the next year.
Extra curricular activities - Secretary of a Global Aids campaign org on campus, as well as one of the 3 largest organizations on campus. I designed and wrote 3 newsletters to be sent to alums of the organization.
In the fall, I will be working on a marketing projecting for a large exhibition at my school's museum, and will be sort of a career representative for a new Public Health group on campus.
I also mentor at a nearby highschool girls every other week in the morning before class, conducting workshops on academics, college prep, good nutrition, etc.
Work and volunteer Experience - I don't have a lot of work experience. I interned with a well-known human rights and refugee resettlement nonprofit last summer in their employment department, working with refugees from Sudan, Somalia, and Burundi. I drafted resumes for them, because the goal was to get them placed with a company within 4 months so that they can be self-sufficient. I taught ESL classes to these refugees even though some were not literate in any language. I also conducted some workshops on financial literacy, took them to job interviews and advocated for higher pay for them with these entry-level jobs.
I've held some jobs on campus in dining services and in the facilities management building as a student assistant.
I also once interned as a student teacher (in highschool) with a program that has bases in various states. I taught 4 classes to approximately 20 students: 2 French, Writing, and Yoga.
I recently went to the Dominican Republic to volunteer for a week. I taught computer literacy classes, for the most part, as well as reading comprehension.
I hope to return in December for a longer period of time.... maybe even a month
Right now, I am trying to make the program a permanent one with the college so that students can go (if they wish) every break after receiving funding from the college.
International ExperienceI was born in a French-speaking country in the Caribbean and lived there for 12 years before moving to the States. The first 12 years of my life, my schooling was in French.
Therefore, I am fluent in French, and also fluent in another French-African dialect.
I studied in Paris for a short time this past year. I recently rejected an offer to study in Switzerland (which I kind of regret), but I did so to finish my major requirements in time to write a senior thesis and conduct research with a professor next spring.
I also have basic conversation skills in Spanish.
GMAT I have yet to take it. In fact, I'm just gathering books and information from this great forum to begin my studying. I really hope I can score a 700+. I am a nervous test taker, but I have been finding some great tips on how to manage your time on the exam, so I hope that will help in the long run.
QuestionsIf you've made it this far in this book i've written, I appreciate it
-How do you think I can improve my profile in the next year???The truth is... I'm secretly looking at the HBS 2+2 program, but I don't know if I have the credentials... but I figure it wouldn't hurt to try. If it doesn't work out, I can just focus on continuing to build my profile and apply to other schools a few years after graduation.
