I have taken my GMAT and my score is:
Total 740 (97%ile)
Verbal 38 (83%ile)
Quant 51 (98%ile)
My question is although my verbal and quant scores are above 80%iles now GMAT precentiles may change from time to time. So my verbal percentile might come below 80%ile in future. Is 80-80 breakup of percentile a stringent criteria for top schools or is it more of a guideline? Is 78%ile or79%ile as good as a 80%ile ?
Also do GMAT percentiles change once every year or does it change from time to time? I could not find any concrete information regarding this from the official website.

The 80th percentiles are comfort zones, not cutoffs so you should be fine even if the percentiles change. My understanding is that the percentiles change "from time to time" rather than once a year, but others on this forum may have a better idea.

I understand that 80%iles are comfort zones but if my score comes to 78 or 79%iles will that put me at any kind of disadvantage for having missed the comfort zone? When 78%ile is compared to 80%ile will 78%ile be treated in the same fashion as 81%ile when 81%ile is compared to 83%ile? Or will missing the 80%ile mark have some additional significance? I am just trying to find out whether 80%ile is an approximate figure just to ensure that we show our competency in both the sections and a little deviation from this has no relevance.
