It took me four times as long to write the report collaboratively as it would have taken me to write it by myself.

A. as it would have taken me to write it by myself.
B. than it would have taken me to write it by myself
C. because it would have taken me to write it by myself
D. than writing it by myself would have done
E. as it took me to write it by myself

Confused between A and E. I was pretty sure that it would be A but somehow got carried away by E. Please help...

I think the difference is based on assumption that the report was written only once, collaboratively (single action). So if you use E, you are talking about two different reports (two actions), comparing the time one spent to write them. 'Would' fixes this logic gap.

In SC Questions, we also have to keep intact the meaning of the original sentence and we cannot change the meaning unless every other option is grammatically incorrect. Basically, the order of Precedence is

Grammar > Meaning > Concision.

Option A & E are both Grammatically correct BUT option E changes the meaning implying that the person wrote the Report both individually and collaboratively.

Yes, you are right. would have taken means that this case is hypothetical.

We can easily eliminate B,C, D. Between E and A, I choose (A). We need to use "would have" because of the hypothetical situation. For eg, It would have taken me less time to write it by myself.

A comparison is being made. Correct structure should be, "as long as".

Options A, E -- only have as in the statements. Eliminate all other options.

Now out of A & E, E says "it took" but the comparison that is being made here is Probability case. Correct sentence structure will be "it took me as long as, it would have taken for doing X". Eliminate E.

So option A is a clear winner.
