Will go with C. The use of Like in B makes it unsuitable.

One thing to remember on this topic is the there is very much a contrast intended between the political campaigns and the commercial campaigns; 'as' or 'like' does not bring out the contrast One can dismiss A through D for this antithetical divergence of meaning. Only E displays contrast through the contrast marker 'unlike'. Therefore, E.

A. dissecting issues and not oversimplifying them, as in campaign commercials

B. dissecting issues instead of oversimplifying them, like campaign commercials

C. dissecting issues rather than oversimplifying them, as campaign commercials do

D. and dissects the issues but does not oversimplify them, as is done in campaign commercials

E. and dissects the issues, unlike campaign commercials that oversimplify them

National debates are the engine that powers political campaigns, dissecting issues and not oversimplifying them, as in campaign commercials.

A. dissecting issues and not oversimplifying them, as in campaign commercials

B. dissecting issues instead of oversimplifying them, like campaign commercials

C. dissecting issues rather than oversimplifying them, as campaign commercials do

D. and dissects the issues but does not oversimplify them, as is done in campaign commercials

The correct response is (C). The original sentence is confusing and awkwardly worded for several reasons. First, “and not” is not the correct idiom to establish contrast; “instead of,” “rather than,” or “unlike” are more appropriate idioms. Also, the word “as” can only be used to introduce a clause, not a phrase. Clauses include a subject and a verb. Therefore, “as” is not the best choice to introduce the prepositional phrase, “in campaign commercials.” “Rather than” is a correct idiom for comparison. “As” is followed by a clause (with a subject, “campaign commercials,” and a verb, “do”). (Note that “oversimplify” is understood in this verb and does not need to be stated.) The comparison is clear and complete.

"E" for me. Waiting for the OA.

National debates are the engine that powers political campaigns, dissecting issues and not oversimplifying them, as in campaign commercials.

A. dissecting issues and not oversimplifying them, as in campaign commercials
Read this choice as "National debates are the engine that powers political campaigns, dissecting issues and not oversimplifying them, as in campaign commercials"
If we read this sentence without the strike part, it is comparing engine that powers political campaigns with campaign commercials. We can't see the contrast here. This is basically +ve comparison and not contrast.

B. dissecting issues instead of oversimplifying them, like campaign commercials
Same as option A

C. dissecting issues rather than oversimplifying them, as campaign commercials do
Same as option A

D. and dissects the issues but does not oversimplify them, as is done in campaign commercials
Same as option A

E. and dissects the issues, unlike campaign commercials that oversimplify them
Correct. Th intended contrast can be seen clearly here. "engine" unlike "campaign commercials". We need to compare a noun with another noun, so we need a like NOT as. The action is not being compared. If we were comparing actions, we would have used "as".

I will go with E.

We need disects that is parallel with powers. Between D and E, option E clarifies the contrast between national debates and commercial campaigns.

What is the OA?
