I am not satisfied with answer.

"is" is used when a singular subject is used.
"are" is used when a plural subject is used.

In this case diesel powered cars is plural. But how "is" is correct in this sentence?

Hey wishalsp333,

In this sentence "The number of diesel-powered cars on the roads", the subject is "The Number" not "diesel-powered cars".
We have a common rule that we don't find the subject of a sentence after a preposition. Here "Of diesel-powered cars" we have a preposition "of". So the element after the preposition "of" can't be the subject.

Example:-
The President of the U.S.A declared war on Korea.

Here the subject is "The President", not "The U.S.A".
Hope it helps.

Can anyone correct me, please?

In my understanding the answer A has a mistake, by stating that "The number of diesel-powered cars on the roads is expected to be more this year ..."

I think the NUMBER can be GREATER, but not "MORE".
Anyone?
