In human beings, a serotonin-like drug, D-Fenfluramine, releases serotonin into brain synapses and then prolongs its action by blocking its reabsorption into the presynaptic neuron, thereby selectively suppresses carbohydrate snacking, and its associated weight gain in people who crave carbohydrates.
Quote:
A) thereby selectively suppresses carbohydrate snacking, and its associated weight gain
thereby needs to be preceded by a semi-colon

Quote:
B) thus selectively suppresses carbohydrate snacking, and its associated weight gain
,thus is not appropriate. Either an "and" or a "semicolon" is required for it to stand for causal relationship.

Quote:
C) in the processes selectively suppresses carbohydrate snacking, and its associated weight gain
preposition "in the processes" can not be preceeded by a comma to modify an action. It should be either a noun "a process that" so that it becomes a Noun + Noun modifier or a verbing should be used

Quote:
D) selectively suppressing carbohydrate snacking, and the associated weight gain
Correct "the associated gain" with the article "the" it logically links to carbohydrate snacking and thus correct. Usage of Verbing suppressing shows a causal relationship of the action in the previous clause.

Quote:
E) selectively suppressing carbohydrate snacking, and its associated weight gain
usage of pronoun "it" in the previous clause has been used for serotonin-like drug for a number of times. Therefore "it" might be ambiguous in referring to the drug even though "its" is associated with carbohydrate snacking here.

IMO
Answer - D

I was torn between D and E.

"thereby selectively suppresses carbohydrate snacking" clearly modifies the nearest action in previous clause i.e "prolongs its action". Hence D and E.

Now i could have rejected "E" on the basis of pronoun ambiguity as it can logically refer to "carbohydrate snacking" or "seretonin", however pronoun ambiguity is not a strict rule for elimination.

Upon analyzing D : the standalone - The Associated Weight" didnt make sense to me.
Associated weight of what ? has to be something.

However I think "E" can be rejected as, when you replace "its" with "carbohydrate snacking" it doesn't make sense.
"carbohydrate snacking associated weight in people who crave carbohydrates.
