Thoreau finds the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans.

A) the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans.
I am ok with the usage of the verb, find, here: it works as does the verb, consider
that stands for the single preceding noun so that the comparison will be correct: here, that stands for behaviour.
Thoreau finds the behavior of warring ants analogous with that[]behavior in warring humans. what? in humans? in their stomach or liver. Actually, parallel structure should be kept, so of works well, not in: the behavior of warring ants...the that [behavior] of warring humans. A is out!

B) that the behavior of warring ants is analogous to that with warring humans.
the main problem is with here with. we should use of instead.
here, B includes the clause after that , and the verb, find, means consider or judge. I think using it so is not immediately wrong, but we can write in a more concise and direct way. B is out!

C) the behavior of warring ants analogous to that of warring humans.
This is what I expect: of is here before warring humans and find is used in a more concise and direct way, I think.
Keep C

D) the behavior of warring ants to be analogous to warring human beings
just as "consider" is preferred more that "consider to be", so "find" itself is better than "find to be", which would be even unidiomatic. D is out!

E) that warring ants and warring humans behave in analogous fashion with each other[/quote]
the original meaning is not that certain ants and humans behave in analogous way with each other, but that their behavior is analogous. E is out!

B) that the behavior of warring ants is analogous to that with warring humans

C) the behavior of warring ants analogous to that of warring humans

D) the behavior of warring ants to be analogous to warring human beings

E) that warring ants and warring humans behave in analogous fashion with each other

Option A - ignoring with, the other problem here is behaviour of someone - behaviour of someone else is the correct form, not behaviour in someone else

Option B - the second that refers to behaviour, so the sentence becomes - to behaviour with warring.... - wrong meaning

option C - looks in order and no meaning issues

option D - behaviour of ants is being equated to humans - wrong comparison

Option E - warring humans and ants behave with each other. Surely the original sentence does not intend this meaning.

answer - c

Thoreau finds the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans.

A) the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans Incorrect

'analogous to' and 'that of ' better usages

B) that the behavior of warring ants is analogous to that with warring humans Keeps

C) the behavior of warring ants analogous to that of warring humans Keeps

D) the behavior of warring ants to be analogous to warring human beings Incorrect

to be analogous - wrong, comparison error- ' the behavior' to 'warring human'

E) that warring ants and warring humans behave in analogous fashion with each other Incorrect

awkward construction

between B & C

B - comparison error - 'the behavior' and 'warring humans '

C - seems fine,

C - should be answer

behavior should be compared in both ,not behavior of ants to human being. incorrect

Thoreau finds the behavior of warrring ants analogous with that in warring humans.

Its a comparison, but incorrect!

A) the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans

'... behavior in warring humans.' is idiomatically incorrect, besides being not parallel to 'behavior of warrring ants'.

B) that the behavior of warring ants is analogous to that with warring humans

The comparison is not parallel: 'behavior of' Vs 'that with'

C) the behavior of warring ants analogous to that of warring humans

Correct - 'behavior of' Vs 'that of', that used correctly as a pronoun here. :)

D) the behavior of warring ants to be analogous to warring human beings

The comparison is not parallel: 'behavior of' Vs 'warring humans'

E) that warring ants and warring humans behave in analogous fashion with each other

Meaning error: seems to suggest that there is an interaction between ants & humans

C is the correct answer, BTW Vitamin C also builds immunity :tongue_opt3

look for the parallelism and comparison

Behavior of.....
that of.......

A) the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans
Eliminate
Behavior of...
that in....
are not parallel

B) that the behavior of warring ants is analogous to that with warring humans

Behavior of...
that with....
are not parallel

C) the behavior of warring ants analogous to that of warring humans

Behavior of...
that of....
are parallel
And comparison is also maintained

D) the behavior of warring ants to be analogous to warring human beings
Comparison Error
Behavior is compared with warring human beings

E) that warring ants and warring humans behave in analogous fashion with each other
This choice is wordy.
and C is better choice

Thoreau finds the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans.

Meaning: Thoreau finds that the behavior of warring ants has been compared to the behavior of warring humans. so we have to make sure that comparison is correct.

Error Analysis: The behavior of warring ants has to be compared with behavior of warring human, and "analogous to" is the correct idiom.

A) the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans ----> analogous to is the correct idiom. the behavior of warring ants has been compared with"the behavior of in warring humans." which doesn't make sense.

B) that the behavior of warring ants is analogous to that with warring humans ----> the behavior of is compared with "the behavior of with warring humans.Incorrect

C) the behavior of warring ants analogous to that of warring humans ----> Correct the behavior of warring ants has been correctly compared to the "behavior of warring humans.

D) the behavior of warring ants to be analogous to warring human beings ----> the behavior has been compared to human beings.Incorrect.

E) that warring ants and warring humans behave in analogous fashion with each other ---> change of meaning.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Project SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)

THE PROMPT
Quote:
Thoreau finds the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans.
Meaning?
Thoreau believes that the behavior of warring ants is comparable to the behavior of warring humans.

THE OPTIONS
Quote:
A) Thoreau finds the behavior of warring ants analogous with that in warring humans
• Comparisons require that the items under comparison be parallel, and in this option they are not
→ behavior OF warring ants [is similar to] [behavior] IN warring humans
Huh? The prepositional phrase in warring humans is jarring.
Is the warring behavior happening in humans?
Nonsense.
Prepositions do not always have to match, but in this instance, no grammatical or logical reason exists to use different prepositions.
In fact, quite the opposite is true.
Parallelism would be maintained if the option compared behavior of warring ants to behavior of warring humans.

• The correct idiom is analogous to, not analogous with
ELIMINATE A
Quote:
B) Thoreau finds that the behavior of warring ants is analogous to that with warring humans.
• behavior of warring ants is analogous to behavior with warring humans?
→ the correct idiom is analogous to, not analogous with

→ you do not need to know the idiom to figure out that this sentence is a logical mess.

Replace the second that with behavior.
What, exactly, does behavior with mean?

The comparison is neither parallel nor logical.
ELIMINATE B

Quote:
C) Thoreau finds the behavior of warring ants analogous to that of warring humans.
• This option looks promising.
Parallelism is maintained because the right items are compared: behavior of XYZ and behavior of ABC
KEEP

Quote:
D) Thoreau finds the behavior of warring ants to be analogous to warring human beings
• the verb find does not always require that
→ I find history fascinating.
This construction is similar to Consider X, Y

Just for the record: consider to be is occasionally acceptable on the GMAT.
Spoiler alert: One recent official question used consider . . . to be in the non-underlined portion of the sentence.
You can find that question by clicking here.

• on the other hand, this option illogically compares the behavior of warring ants to [warring] human beings
ELIMINATE D (if you have doubts, compare (D) to (C))

Quote:
E) Thoreau finds that warring ants and warring humans behave in analogous fashion with each other.
• Ants and human beings do not behave in any way with each other.
In other words, ants and human beings do not interact in a manner similar to the manner that children interact on a playground.
ELIMINATE E

The answer is C.
