Project SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC1)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

For centuries, dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe that such figures have the power to keep pots from boiling over.

A) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe
WRONG - 1. "they" wrongly modifies kitchens; 2. "have hung"- this is a continuous activity which is happened (or is happening) over a certain period of time. "Have" (or present perfect) implies that this has been over but it's effect still exists. This fails to convey the intended meaning.

B) dolls dressed as witches have been hung in Norwegian kitchens because of a traditional belief
CORRECT - Correct usage of Present perfect, have been hung"

C) dolls dressed as witches hang in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe
WRONG - same error as A

D) dolls dressed as witches had hung in Norwegian kitchens because of it traditionally being believed
WRONG - "it", a singular pronoun, modifies what? There is no singular noun as an antecedent for "it".

E) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because of traditionally believing
WRONG - "believing" is incorrect.

Option B. The sentence means to say that the practice is observed even now.

The only option which leads us to understand that it is past present is have been hung. Only option B matches this.

All other options get the grammar or the tense wrong.

A) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe - wrong, have hung and traditionally believe are both wrong

B) dolls dressed as witches have been hung in Norwegian kitchens because of a traditional belief - correct, tense is perfect and traditional belief is the coreect and succinct way of writing this

C) dolls dressed as witches hang in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe - tense is incorrect and all other issues from A persist

D) dolls dressed as witches had hung in Norwegian kitchens because of it traditionally being believed - tense is incorrect, 'had' makes us believe it doesn't happen anymore

E) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because of traditionally believing - incorrect, due to issues also present in option A.

For centuries, dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe that such figures have the power to keep pots from boiling over.

A) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe
Ambiguous use of 'they'. What does 'they' refer to? Logically, it can't be dolls or kitchens since both are inanimate objects.

B) dolls dressed as witches have been hung in Norwegian kitchens because of a traditional belief
Corrects ambiguity by not using pronoun. Correct use of verb tense since we need a present perfect verb tense to represent an action that is continuing from the past (noted from 'For centuries...')

C) dolls dressed as witches hang in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe
Same reasoning as A.

D) dolls dressed as witches had hung in Norwegian kitchens because of it traditionally being believed
What does 'it' refer to? In addition, the pronoun 'it' is suppose to agree with tenses. The nouns that are here are 'dolls', 'witches' and 'kitchens'; all are plural.

E) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because of traditionally believing
'Traditionally believing' is not the correct verb form. In fact, we need a main noun in the relative clause.

On seeing the first two words of the question stem "For centuries", I knew that the correct answer requires the present perfect continuous tense and the only option which uses this tense is option B. The other reason option B is the answer is because of the usage of the correct noun/ correct noun form i.e. "belief".

Therefore, the OA is B.

Options A and C are out because of their usage of the word "they" which creates ambiguity .

Options D and E are out as D uses the word "it" which leads to ambiguity and E is out due to the usage of "traditionally believing".

A) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe — “they” has no antecedent. Eliminate.

B) dolls dressed as witches have been hung in Norwegian kitchens because of a traditional belief — keep. Though I’d have preferred “the” traditional belief. But hey, it’s abt finding 4 perfectly wrong ones.

C) dolls dressed as witches hang in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe — same as A. Eliminate.

D) dolls dressed as witches had hung in Norwegian kitchens because of it traditionally being believed — “had hung”, because of must be followed by a noun / noun phrase, not a pathetic attempt at a clause :-/

E) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because of traditionally believing — the present progressive doesn’t make any sense here. When speaking of general facts such as a commonly held belief, best to use simple present. Enough to doubt this. Eliminate.

B is our winner.

Two errors we need to correct in this sentence:

dolls dressed as witches have hung - this wording suggests that 'dolls' hung themselves in the kitchen but that can't be the case. Norwegian people hung dolls in their kitchens. And they have been doing it for centuries, so usage of 'present perfect continuous tense' will be correct here.

Also 'they' has to refer to 'Norwegian people' here, but in this sentence we don't have any antecedent for they. Sentence has used 'Norwegian kitchens' not 'Norwegian people', so usage of they is not correct.

A) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe - wrong as explained above

B) dolls dressed as witches have been hung in Norwegian kitchens because of a traditional belief - this is the correct usage

C) dolls dressed as witches hang in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe - because this practice is being followed even today, usage of past tense is wrong..also they don't have 'antecedent'

D) dolls dressed as witches had hung in Norwegian kitchens because of it traditionally being believed - had is used to refer to prior events in case of two events in the past, but here we are talking only about one event

E) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because of traditionally believing - retains the same error as in choice A

B) dolls dressed as witches have been hung in Norwegian kitchens because of a traditional belief

C) dolls dressed as witches hang in Norwegian kitchens because they traditionally believe

D) dolls dressed as witches had hung in Norwegian kitchens because of it traditionally being believed

E) dolls dressed as witches have hung in Norwegian kitchens because of traditionally believing[/quote]
The best tense is the past perfect of an action that has been done In the past and continuing into the future.
Then option B is the best.
