My answer is (D). It took me 30 seconds.

(A) "their" should be "its".

(B) Comma splice.

(C) "its range that extends from north-central Chile to southernmost South America" is just a noun (its range followed by a relative clause). It is a poorly constructed sentence. Its bare-bones version: The firecrown is the most widely distributed, its range.

(D) Correct use of Absolute Phrase. (Read more at https://www.thoughtco.com/absolute-phra ... l%20phrase).

(E) See (A) & (B).

IMO. D took me 40 Secs

Their is plural while the subject is singular ie. the green-backed firecrown hence we need its , A and E are gone
B-Comma Splice , C- Incomplete Sentence there has to be some action after that ........

Also Extending will bring out the correct meaning vs extended.

Out of the nine hummingbird species found in Chile, the green-backed firecrown is the most widely distributed, their range extending from north-central Chile to southernmost South America.

A) their range extending from north-central Chile to southernmost South America.
- the green-backed firecrown (their)
- Pronoun Antecedent Error

B) its range extends from north-central Chile to southernmost South America.
-Structural error (IC,IC)

C) its range that extends from north-central Chile to southernmost South America.
- it appears as (N+N) modifier and conveying the same meaning as D. Rejected C considering wordy and awkward (but not convinced). Looking forward for OE

D) its range extending from north-central Chile to southernmost South America.
- Noun (its range) + Ing (extending) - Noun + Noun Modifier modifying "the green-backed firecrown"
- CORRECT

E) their range extends from north-central Chile to southernmost South America.
- the green-backed firecrown (their)
- Pronoun Antecedent Error
