OFFICIAL EXPLANATIONProject SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)
THE PROMPTIn 2005, geologists studying two ancient rock formations in Northern Canada, a region often described as gateway to the Arctic, discovered that not only did the two rocks
carried the same geochemical signature, but that, when viewed under high powered microscopes, their geochemistry also changed in the exact same way.
• To maintain parallel structure, whatever construction comes after not only needs to be repeated after but also.
If a common word comes before the parallelism marker Not Only, that common word applies to both and should not be repeated.
Correct:
That Not Only X But also Y [once outside]
Correct:
Not only that X But also that Y [twice inside]
Wrong: That Not only X But Also That Y
Wrong: Not only that X But Also Y
Wrong: Not only X but Also that Y
THE OPTIONSQuote:
A) . . .discovered that not only
did the two rocks
carried the same geochemical signature, but that, when viewed under high powered microscopes, their geochemistry also changed in the exact same way.
• The use of
carried is incorrect.
→ The sentence already uses a past tense verb
did after not only, so the correct word should be
carry.
• Not parallel
The use of
that after
but is incorrect since
that has been used before
not only in the sentence and, hence, does not have to be repeated with
but also. • Modifier
The modifying phrase
when viewed under high powered microscopes seems to be describing the
geochemistry of the rocks.

• not parallel
If a common word such as
that comes before the parallelism marker and the X element, in this type of closed constructive (a "correlative conjunction"), do not repeat the common word.
If the common word is
once outside the Not only X but also Y structure, the word will carry across Not Only X and But Also Y

The answer is B.COMMENTSThese answers are very good.
warrior1991 , you are indeed correct: If a common word such as THAT comes before the construction (Not only X but also Y), then "that" should not be repeated.
On the other hand, if
that comes after Not Only X, then the word "that" must also come after But Also Y.
I wrote about how to keep this idiomatic construction parallel, and in particular about how to use "Not only X But also Y" and THAT
in this post, here.
Another post about the matter is
here.
Very nice work!
