@Nikhil & Ankur

Let me try to answer your question.

Profit = Revenue from sales - Costs

A: Increase in production capacity is good, but what if the revenue after the sale of those manufactured goods did not increase because of factors such as may be the price per unit decreased, more competitors jump in, or consumer behaviour got changed.

E: States directly that the revenues got doubled, putting aside all above assumptions. Also, see the answer choice hints that the acquisition happened just before Hogg's predecessor was about to be replaced, thus weakens the author's point further that it was actually the predecessor who turned the fortunes and not Ms. Hogg.

step 1 : Find the conclusion "Obviously Ms. Hodges’ aggressive marketing efforts have caused the acceleration in the growth of Caralis’ profits." which clearly indicates that this is a causal relation
a) Aggressive marketing efforts have caused increased profits .
If we try to weaken this we must try to find another cause that could have led to increase of profits and thus bingo we have found E as our answer .

Since Arlene Hodges was installed as president of the Caralis corporation, profits have increased by an average of 11 percent per year. During the tenure of her predecessor, the corporation’s profits averaged a yearly increase of only 7 percent. Obviously Ms. Hodges’ aggressive marketing efforts have caused the acceleration in the growth of Caralis’ profits.
Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the conclusion drawn above?
(A) The corporation’s new manufacturing plant, constructed in the past year, has resulted in a 15 percent increase in production capacity.
(B) For each year of Ms. Hodges’ presidency, the corporation’s financial records show an increase in profits over the previous year.
(C) During the tenure of Ms. Hodges’ predecessor, the corporation began an advertising campaign aimed at capturing consumers between the ages of 24 and 35.
(D) Since Ms. Hodges became president, the corporation has switched the primary focus of its advertising from print ads to radio and television commercials.
(E) Just before he was replaced, Ms. Hodges’ predecessor directed the acquisition of a rival corporation, which has nearly doubled the corporation’s yearly revenues.

(A) The corporation’s new manufacturing plant, constructed in the past year, has resulted in a 15 percent increase in production capacity. Only if there is a demand. We don't know.

(B) For each year of Ms. Hodges’ presidency, the corporation’s financial records show an increase in profits over the previous year. Strengthener

(C) During the tenure of Ms. Hodges’ predecessor, the corporation began an advertising campaign aimed at capturing consumers between the ages of 24 and 35. We don't know about its success.

(D) Since Ms. Hodges became president, the corporation has switched the primary focus of its advertising from print ads to radio and television commercials. We don't know about its success.

(E) Just before he was replaced, Ms. Hodges’ predecessor directed the acquisition of a rival corporation, which has nearly doubled the corporation’s yearly revenues. Direct answer

(E)

such pattern of the argument is common in gmat. Nevertheless, the option choices may change from questions to questions. If ones practice much, they will know that E gives an alternative explanation that weakens the argument.
