What is the source of this question? I do not agree with the answer.

Just because people use self-harming substances, doesnt make them harmful to the society. It is the consumption of that substance that is harmful not the people and the argument makes this distinction (implicitly). A is definitely wrong. C looks best but the others are worth some debating. A is undoubtedly not the correct answer.

Confused between A and E.
A- For a substance to be addictive, its users must pose a harm to society. --> alcohol and drugs are addictive and they pose harm to society. Caffeine on the other hand doesn't. So it is not addictive?

E- Headaches and irritability upon withdrawal are not necessary components of an addiction to a substance. --> Withdrawal symptoms are not necessary for a substance to be called addictive. Hence caffeine is not addictive?

Please help.

Hi ShrishtiK,
An assumption fills the logical gap between the conclusion and premises on which the conclusion is drawn.
In this argument:
Author`s Conclusion -> "caffeine is not an addictive substance"
Premise on which the conclusion is based -> "the consumption of caffeine cannot be said to pose any harm to society"

"histories of drug or alcohol abuse" is presented to counter the frequently claimed argument: caffeine is an addictive substance because "users often show withdrawal symptoms such as headaches and irritability". Option E could be an assumption of the this counter argument but not the author's argument.
Then, the author presents his or her argument, concluding "caffeine is not an addictive substance". This conclusion is based on premise that "the consumption of caffeine cannot be ..." .
So, Option A correctly states the assumption for author's argument.

It helped. I would need to separate the main conclusion from the points in between.
So, if I understand correctly,
E- The author has already taken care of this assumption by stating "Those who exhibit caffeine-consuming behavior that seems to evidence an addiction are overwhelmingly those who also have histories of drug or alcohol abuse"

The only assumption left to be taken care of in the authors argument is regarding harm to society, which option A clearly addresses.

thanks!

I agree - caffeine is not addictive, I am currently taking caffeine in both coffee and there is
available caffeine tablets in 100 mg. and even 200 mg.

The 100 mg & 200 mg are too high dose so I break it and take a smaller dose

How would you negate A in this case?

Also when you negate D it definitely weakens the conclusion. Could someone explain the issue with D?
