City X has the highest percentage of households with an annual income higher than $50,000. However, the percentage of households with an annual income of $70,000 or more is highest in City Y.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must also be true?

a The percentage of households with an annual income of $100,000 is higher in City Y than in City X.
b City X has the second highest percentage of households with an annual income of $70,000 or more.
c Some households in City X have an annual income between $50,000 and $70,000.
d The number of households with an annual income of more than $50,000 is greater in City X than in City Y.
e Average annual household income is higher in City Y than in City X.

Sir..

This question, especially options (C) and (D), needs further deliberation. Both the options (ie, C & D) will satisfy 'must be true' criteria as per the premises given in the stimulus. The explanation is as under :-

(C) Some households in City X have an annual income between $50,000 and $70,000.

As per the stimulus, City X has the highest percentage of households with an annual income higher than $50,000. while the percentage of households with an annual income of $70,000 or more is highest in City Y. Evidently, there are 'necessarily' some (in fact, large number) of households n City X who have an annual income between $50,000 and $70,000, consequently tilting the percentage in favour of City X when the 'annual income' range is enlarged from 'higher than $70000' to higher than $50000'

(D) The number of households with an annual income of more than $50,000 is greater in City X than in City Y.

Since the stimulus clearly mentions that City X has the highest percentage of households with an annual income higher than $50,000, it provides sufficient grounds to deduce with certainty that 'the number of households (since City X has the highest percentage of households with annual income higher than $50000..as per the stimulus) with an annual income of more than $50,000 will be greater in City X than in City Y or, for that matter, any other city '.

Simultaneously, (A), (B) & (E) can not be verified to be always true, so discarded.
