The proposition best illustrated by the passage is:

E Altruistic actions sometimes have positive consequences for those who perform them.

The passage describes how Naomi, the owner of a cookware appliance store, donated cookware and other electronics to school programs to encourage better eating habits and support cooking skills. The members of the community also showed support by purchasing appliances from her dealership. This situation demonstrates that Naomi's altruistic actions (donating to the community) have resulted in positive consequences for her (increased support and business from the community). This aligns with option E, showing that altruistic actions can lead to positive outcomes for the individuals who perform them.

Let's crack into it!

The passage revolves around Naomi's concern about obesity levels in young adults and her subsequent action to address it. She donates cookware to schools to promote better eating habits, believing that cooking at home can help. And, as a bonus for her kindness, she receives support from the community with some members purchasing from her store.

Now, let's go through the answer choices:

Quote:
A) The only way to reduce obesity is by eating home-cooked food.

The passage doesn't assert that home-cooked food is the sole solution. Naomi just believes it's a helpful approach.

Quote:
B) Educational session on cooking are the only way to encourage youth to eat healthier.

Again, the passage doesn't claim that cooking sessions are the sole method for healthier eating. It's just one of Naomi's strategies.

Quote:
C) Young adults are the group most likely to benefit from cooking programs.

Naomi is indeed concerned about obesity in young adults, but the passage doesn't say they're the "most likely" to benefit. This is a bit of a stretch.

Quote:
D) It is usually in one's best interest to perform actions that benefit others.

While a beautiful sentiment, this statement is too general. The passage focuses more on Naomi's specific scenario.

Quote:
E) Altruistic actions sometimes have positive consequences for those who perform them.

This hits the nail on the head! Naomi’s kind act of donating has a positive rebound effect, with members of the community supporting her business in return.

The best fit:
E) Altruistic actions sometimes have positive consequences for those who perform them.

It's like the universe giving a little wink and nod to good deeds. 😊 Hope that clarifies things!

Naomi, who owns a cookware appliance store, has donated cookware and other electronics to programs intended to develop cooking skills at schools within that area. She found statistics relating to the obesity levels in young adults to be disturbing, she wanted to do something to encourage better eating habits by helping people cook their own food at home. Some members of the community have shown their support for this action by purchasing cookware appliances from Naomi’s dealership.

Which one of the following propositions is best illustrated by the passage?

A The only way to reduce obesity is by eating home cooked food.
B Educational session on cooking are the only way to encourage youth to eat healthier
C Young adults are the group most likely to benefit from cooking programs.
D It is usually in ones best interest to perform actions that benefit others.
E Altruistic actions sometimes have positive consequences for those who perform them

I have doubt about your explanation. Naomi is concerned about young adults so if this group is not the major concern then her efforts may get wasted? What if the major concern is children? then she wont be able to succeed in her plan fully. SO we can conclude that Young adults are the group most likely to be benefitted by the program if not then her efforts are wasted.

And anyway how can we assume that increasing sale is beneficial to her? It is not said that her 'PROFIT' increased due to her action. Its just said that her sale increased but whether its beneficial for her or not how can we conclude in GMAT? It is explicitly said that dont assume real world scenario unless stated so assuming inc in sale = beneficial is indeed real world thing. Why there is no any fixed rule? Why rule vary question to question.
