I think it should be D.
People click photos of the paintings. The amount of time they devote to observe a painting is less than one minute.---------------------People are less willing to engage in works of art than they once were.

Before considering the conclusion, the first thing that should come to one's mind is that WHY did they click those pictures? Probably so that they don't waste a lot of time in the museum and maybe look at the snaps when they are free. Or maybe some other reason which is not that apparent.

The author says that 'people are less willing to engage in works of art than they once were.' This means that they were clicking pictures not for later review but for some other reason.

D says that rarely do people look at the pictures that they clicked in the museum.
This means that the interest in works of art is dying.

Also, you can negate D to see whether the argument holds.

Hi vaibhav1221

When critic makes a statement that "People have become less willing to engage with works of art than they once were" then there must be a reason behind it. Do you think critic might be thinking that these people who take snapshots might not look at them later and then he comes to a conclusion that these people have become less willing to engage in art?

Earlier people used to look at the art for longer and they showed interest by looking at the art for longer. Critic reaches a conclusion on measuring the time people spend looking at the art now a days.

Hence E should be the correct assumption in my opinion.

4. Art critic: Nowadays, museum visitors seldom pause to look at a work of art for even a full minute. They look, perhaps take a snapshot, and move on. This tells us something about how our relationship to art has changed over time. People have become less willing to engage with works of art than they once were.

The art critic's argument depends on the assumption that

(A) museum visitors today generally look at more pieces of art during each museum visit than museum visitors looked at in the past

(B) the ease with which museum visitors can take snapshots of art contributes to the speed with which they move through art museums

(C) visitors would enjoy their museum experiences more if they took more time with individual works of art

(D) museum visitors who take snapshots of works of art rarely look at the pictures afterward

(E) the amount of time spent looking at a work of art is a reliable measure of engagement with that work

+1 - E.

Critic is trying to link time spent looking at art work with willingness to engage with art work. Therefore, he believes that is giving more time to look at an art work is a reliable measure.

Hi!
I guess you are right. E definitely looks better than D.

Art critic: Nowadays, museum visitors seldom pause to look at a work of art for even a full minute. They look, perhaps take a snapshot, and move on. This tells us something about how our relationship to art has changed over time. People have become less willing to engage with works of art than they once were.

(P)Visitors spent less time to look at artwork
(P)Visitors took snap shot & move on
(C)People in general -> less willing to engage with works of art than before.

After read the conclusion, I asked myself this question: "What in the world is causing people becoming less willing to engage with work of art?"

Quick glance at the summary again, I see that Premise is talking about "time looking at artwork" and the Conclusion is talking about "less willing to engage with work". Clearly, those two Boldface are NEW information in the conclusion and the premise respectively. This must be a "Supporter Assumption" question type. Hence, the correct answer choice will more than likely mention about those two.

The art critic's argument depends on the assumption that

Quote:
(A) museum visitors today generally look at more pieces of art during each museum visit than museum visitors looked at in the past
How long do they spend on looking at each piece? Do they engage more or less with those artworks? (A) is out
Quote:
(B) the ease with which museum visitors can take snapshots of art contributes to the speed with which they move through art museums
Perhaps they take snapshots to look at them later on, spending more time on that art. Perhaps they are just like me leaving majority of the photos untouched. (B) is out.
Quote:
(C) visitors would enjoy their museum experiences more if they took more time with individual works of art
Right, they would enjoy more if they took more time with each art work. But did they do so? (C) is out.
Quote:
(D) museum visitors who take snapshots of works of art rarely look at the pictures afterward
I think talk about this in (B). However, it is possible that the visitors spent enough time to engage with artworks, even though time amount is not much. Perhaps, the amount of time looking at the artwork is not important after all. Sometimes looking at an artwork for too long, for some people, might drive them crazy. (D) is out
Quote:
(E) the amount of time spent looking at a work of art is a reliable measure of engagement with that work
This, similar to what we have discussed above, connects the rogue element of the Premise and Conclusion. It is also the only remaining answer choice. (E) is correct.

If we negate option E then it conclude that time spent is not measure of engagement with art work. Clearly, this breakdowns the argument.

Hence, Ans is option E

Hope it helps !
