Can someone please explain why not (C)?

(C) Most of the gold mines that Moradco operates are not located in Velyena.

Take a reverse of C-

Most of the gold mines that Moradco operates are located in Velyena.

Now suppose Moradco has a total of 5 gold mines and 3 gold mines are there in Velyena. Along with it, suppose there are 30 non gold mines as well in Velyena.

-Now Notice our argument is still true, check out the 1st line of argument now,
"Most of the mines that Moradco operates in the province of Velyena have never violated environmental regulations"
Out of 33 mines in veleyena, only 3 violated regulations.

But if you will reverse the d option, the argument will break down. Try it.

(D) Most of the mines that Moradco operates in Velyena are not gold mines.
Reverse- Most of the mines that Moradco operates in Velyena are gold mines. Therefore most mines in velyena should violated environmental regulations. But this contradicts the 1st line of statement.

Most of the mines that Moradco operates in the province of Velyena have never violated environmental regulations. Every one of the gold mines that Moradco operates throughout the world has at some time or another violated environmental regulations.

Which one of the following statements follows logically from the statements above?

(A) Moradco operates more mines in Velyena than any other company operates there. - WRONG. Other companies are not inferable.

(B) The total number of gold mines that Moradco operates is larger than the total number of mines it operates in Velyena. - WRONG. Nothing about total number of mines is inferable.

(C) Most of the gold mines that Moradco operates are not located in Velyena. - WRONG. It is possible that most of the Gold mines are in Velyena but they form a minority when overall mines in Velyena are considered. And equally it is also possible that they are not majority in comparison to all gold mines present in the world.

(D) Most of the mines that Moradco operates in Velyena are not gold mines. - CORRECT. Gold mines form minority in Velyena thus conclusion stands strong.

(E) Most of the mines that Moradco operates throughout the world are not gold mines. - WRONG. It is not known anything about the mines Moradco operates in the world. So, it can be gold mines or equally any other ones as well.

Answer D.

The statements in the passage are as follows:

Most of the mines that Moradco operates in the province of Velyena have never violated environmental regulations.
Every one of the gold mines that Moradco operates throughout the world has at some time or another violated environmental regulations.

Option (D) states: "Most of the mines that Moradco operates in Velyena are not gold mines."

Given the information provided, if most of the mines in Velyena have never violated environmental regulations, and every gold mine operated by Moradco throughout the world has violated regulations, it could be inferred that most of Moradco's mines in Velyena are not gold mines.

What we know:
- Most Velyena mines = "clean" (never violated)
- ALL gold mines = "dirty" (have violated)

Why D is correct:
Since clean things can't be dirty things, most Velyena mines cannot be gold mines.
Looking at Velyena mines → most are NOT gold. This must be true.

Why C doesn't work:
C asks a different question: "Of all gold mines worldwide, are most outside Velyena?"

We simply don't have this information!

Test it with numbers:
Say Moradco has 100 Velyena mines (90 clean, 10 gold).

Scenario 1: Company has 1000 gold mines total → only 1% in Velyena → C is true
Scenario 2: Company has 12 gold mines total → 83% in Velyena → C is false

Both scenarios satisfy the premises, but C is true in one and false in the other. Therefore, C doesn't logically follow.

The Key Takeaway:
- D says: Looking at Velyena mines → most are NOT gold ✓
- C says: Looking at gold mines → most are NOT in Velyena ✗

Just because most Velyena mines aren't gold doesn't mean most gold mines aren't in Velyena. The logic only flows one direction based on what we're given.
