Social worker: Despite the existence of a public school system that does not demand fees of any kind, children drop out of school at an early age due to various difficulties at home.

School principal: Difficulties at home are not exactly the cause behind the children leaving school. The problem is that many parents simply allow their children to choose whether to go to school or stay home, and that in such cases children will obviously choose not to go to school.

Which of the following, if true, most weakens the principal's objection to the social worker's claim?

(A) It has been noted that parents today are far less adamant about their children attending school with perfect regularity than parents were 50 years ago. Incorrect

it support principal argument

(B) A public school system that does not require the payment of fees can only be maintained by the collection of relatively high income taxes. Incorrect

extra info

(C) A recent survey shows that 9 out of 10 children would avoid school attendance if given the opportunity to do so. Incorrect

new info

(D) Research in the field of education and social structure shows that a large percentage of children from low-income families must spend 8 hours a day working or taking care of siblings Correct

so, difficulties is the reason for drop out, support social worker argument

(E) The premature departure of children from the schooling program affects the number of professional employees and, in turn, the economy. Incorrect

new info

(A) It has been noted that parents today are far less adamant about their children attending school with perfect regularity than parents were 50 years ago. - Not relevant. We don't care what happened 50 years ago. Incorrect.

(B) A public school system that does not require the payment of fees can only be maintained by the collection of relatively high income taxes. No relevant. Incorrect.

(C) A recent survey shows that 9 out of 10 children would avoid school attendance if given the opportunity to do so. Attendance is too narrow choice here. If in any way, it would strengthen principal's statement. Incorrect.

(D) Research in the field of education and social structure shows that a large percentage of children from low-income families must spend 8 hours a day working or taking care of siblings. Correct. Some other cause for children to opt out of school. This weakens the principal's statement.

(E) The premature departure of children from the schooling program affects the number of professional employees and, in turn, the economy. Not relevant. Incorrect.

IMO D

(A) It has been noted that parents today are far less adamant about their children attending school with perfect regularity than parents were 50 years ago.
- This infact strengthens the principals reasoning. Eliminate

(B) A public school system that does not require the payment of fees can only be maintained by the collection of relatively high income taxes.
- Not relevant to our discussion as it does not attack or undermine any of the claims. Eliminate

(C) A recent survey shows that 9 out of 10 children would avoid school attendance if given the opportunity to do so.
- This again strengthens the principals claims. Eliminate

(D) Research in the field of education and social structure shows that a large percentage of children from low-income families must spend 8 hours a day working or taking care of siblings
- Now this perfectly weakens principals claims as children might have other family commitments to look after and it can affect their decision to come to school. Keep

(E) The premature departure of children from the schooling program affects the number of professional employees and, in turn, the economy.
- Irrelevant to our discussion, same as (B). Eliminate

(A) It has been noted that parents today are far less adamant about their children attending school with perfect regularity than parents were 50 years ago. -> 50 years ago is not our concern. Incorrect.

(B) A public school system that does not require the payment of fees can only be maintained by the collection of relatively high income taxes. -> Irrelevant.

(C) A recent survey shows that 9 out of 10 children would avoid school attendance if given the opportunity to do so. -> Support School principal claim. Incorrect.

(D) Research in the field of education and social structure shows that a large percentage of children from low-income families must spend 8 hours a day working or taking care of siblings -> Yes. It can be a reason, which is WEAKENING as "children obviously don't choose to go to school" claim.

(E) The premature departure of children from the schooling program affects the number of professional employees and, in turn, the economy. -> Irrelevant.

So, I think D. :)
