i am going with option a.
we are given that the practices overall are same and the specific 14% would have different aging and handling practices which are leading to such contamination problems. but if we say that those 14% are the highest contributor, they are also bound to more such cases and nothing wrt their practices are the reasons. b says more hygiene citations which can lead us to due to more flawed practices assumption maybe so somewhat supports hence incorrect. c is a statistical trap while d and e talk about duration and capacity irrelevant to the conclusion of the argument.

The question tells us that 85 percent of cheese contamination incidents happened in just 14 percent of the facilities.
The argument presented is that there must be something wrong with the aging and handling practices.
This assumes that everything else is identical between low contamination and high contamination sites.

A: Aging greater amount compared to a similar sized group is not a strong factor that supports or weakens the argument because there are many variables. We don't know if the contamination was evenly spread across the 14% of the facilities, hence comparing it with a similar sized set will not give a clear understanding.
B: If regional inspectors issued higher number of citations to these 14 percent of facilities, it would strengthen the argument that there was something wrong with the processes being followed.
C: This one seems interesting. Since over 90% of the cheese was processed at just 12% of the facilities, it shows a concentration of distribution. This can mean that the contamination is not about aging and handling process, but a byproduct of higher processing. We hold onto this.

Correct answer- A


We need to provide an alternate plausible explanation.

A- Since they handled more cheese, they had more opportunities for contamination. Best.
B- This suggests more hygience violations and poorer handling practices. It strengthens the argument rather.
C-Doesnt weaken that much.
D. May support the author's argument. While longer aging could lead to more contamination opportunites but this is more about aging practices.
E-Not relevant.

Not really sure if I got it correct but here's my process:

Option A: 14% of facilities produced more cheese than any other group of comparable size. I eliminated this because while it is a greater volume of cheese aged, we can't say how much greater. It could just be slightly greater and that shouldn't be a strong enough reason for us to think that volume of cheese is actually affecting the contamination.

Option B: If this is true, that would mean that hygiene is the actual reason for contamination. Thus, this is the right answer as per me.

Option C: This is just a bunch of numbers I could not understand. There are no specific mentions if the facilities mentioned in this option are actually the facilities in question. I eliminated this.

Option D: I was confused with this a bit. The average duration could be a factor. however, I found the Hygiene reason to be a stronger option.

Option E: This really does not show us any relative relation with the rest of the facilities. It could be true that the production also increased in the rest of the facilities, but contamination didn't. Eliminate.

Premise 1 = 14% of artisan cheese ageing facilities of world involved in 85% contamination cases.

Premise 2 = Other 86% use same cave ventilation and temperature control systems.

Conclusion = So the disparity must be due to handling and ageing practises.

We need to find the weakener.

GAP = If a small number of facilities produce majority of contaminated cheese, its practises may be wrong but what if these small number of facilities are also producing majority of cheese. Then, rates of contamination would rise even if its practices aren't wrong.

Lets go through the choices:

Lets start with B = this is actually a strengthener. If these facilities have had to implement stricter hygiene citations, their practise may have been worse than the 84%. Incorrect.

D = Does not clearly weaken. Longer ageing practise could be an ageing praictise difference which is what the argument suggests.

E = Vague, we don't know 100% of how much.

Remains A and C

A is very tempting, tries to cover the GAP of the argument and in the right direction but weaker than C which covers the gap with numbers. C is our answer.

Given: Of 85% inc === one of 14% was of facilities were responsible.

since other 86% use same types of systems as these 14% above, the contamination is not related to these systems used but might be due to significant aging and handling practises.

to Weaken we need to show aging and handling is same or systems are somehow not the same in terms of production for the 14% compared to 86%

A) is right since it shows 14% have overused the system from production stand point compared to the 86% group. SO system may not have same efficiency...so keep

B) Regnl inspectors citations are out of scope

c)12% facilities accounting for 93% cheese and these had 76% incidents...Now we dont if this includes the 14% group and does not help deny how aging and handling is not the reason

d)Duration of cheese processing in the 14% was double strenghtens the arrguement, so inverse effect of what we wantt

e) 14% facilies showing 100% capacity increase might make us think that commonality may be the reason but it still doesnot weaken since this proves that despite capacity increase, they had a problem, so handling practise is the reason..again partially stregthens, inverse effect

To weaken the arguement, we need an alternate explanation for why those 14% facities accounts for son many incidents.

Evaluation of choices:

A- It explain why 14% are having more contamination because of larger volumes of cheese handling, & undermines the arguemnet that handling & aging practices must be resposnible.

B - Strengther

C - info reagrding other groups, no info/exaplanation regarding the 14 %

D - Still looking for teh explantion for 14 %

E - Increased production capacity doesn't explain the contamination concentration.

(A) The 14 percent of facilities with the most contamination incidents collectively aged a greater total volume of cheese than any other comparable-sized group of facilities.
This directly weakens the argument. If these facilities handled a much larger volume of cheese, it's natural they'd have more contamination incidents in raw numbers simply due to scale, more batches, more surface area, more chances for something to go wrong. This gives a perfectly good alternative explanation (volume) that has nothing to do with differences in practices, which is exactly what's needed to undercut the argument's conclusion. This might be the correct answer.

(B) Regional food safety inspectors issued far more hygiene citations to the high-contamination facilities than to the other facilities last year.
This actually supports the argument rather than weakening it. More hygiene citations suggests these facilities really did have worse practices, which reinforces the original conclusion instead of undermining it.

(C) Twelve percent of the facilities accounted for 93 percent of all cheese aged globally last year, and those facilities were involved in 76 percent of the contamination incidents.
This looks similar to (A) but doesn't line up with the argument's specific numbers. The argument was about the 14 percent group tied to 85 percent of incidents. This option introduces a different figure 12 percent of facilities without confirming this is the same group being discussed. Since we can't be sure these are the same facilities this doesn't cleanly attack the argument.
