A. Is correct ! If pebbles discovered inside the nest have more wear and tear. It must be used for grinding seeds otherwise it's structural in use.
D is not correct as nutrition of seeds have nothing to do with the function of pebbles.
E. would make it very broad and no co relation can be drawn.
B. Is OOS as other ant species
C. It tells nothing about the use of pebbles.

E is the correct answer. If colonies that don't need structural support also collect pebbles, it weakens the hypothesis that pebbles are used for that purpose. If they don't collect pebbles, the hypothesis is supported.

For A, wear patterns on pebbles could be from different sources aside from grinding such a transportation and storing, so that fact doesn't necessarily mean grinding is the reason for pebble collection.

B would create a generalization that since another species use pebbles for structural reasons that this one does at well, but we cannot jump to that conclusion. Our colonies are an different population of ants.

C does suggest that grinding might be the reason for pebble storage, but the location of the pebbles does not definitively tell us what their use is for. They could be stored in brood chambers for a number of reasons.

D Nutrient content of seeds is irrelevant to how the pebbles are used.

Fact: Anti bring pebble inside
Problem 1-hard seeds --hypo--pebbles grinds seeds
problem 2 loose soil--hypo-- pebbles reinforce tunnels

to isolate the scenerio out of competating hypo, we need to find a scenerio that eliminate the need for one fuction

I think the answer is E

Option A: I was confused for this. This seemed a good choice as it could explain the purpose of the pebbles being taken in. Higher wear could show that they were being used for grinding. I kept the option on hold.

Option B: The other species who collect pebbles could be collecting it for whatever reason. There is not enough information for us to say why they do that. And it does not concern the current species that we are talking about in the stem. Eliminate.

Option C: Brood rearing would be a completely different purpose. Doesn't help us choose between the two hypotheses proposed in the stem. Eliminate.

Option D: The nutrient content of the seeds does not concern us. Eliminate

Option E: This option, if true, will definitively helps us understand that the pebbles are indeed being used for grinding. I went with this as this felt more specific to our stem. Option A, while might give us a possible explanation, the wear mentioned in that option could be because of anything.

So I chose E as the answer.

The answer is A

Worn out will indicate that the pebbles have been indeed used for grinding. Additionally since the pebbles are worn out they won't be able to provide much structural enforcement to the walls.

Basically the simple question is, why are the pebbles being used for?
1st usage: they are used as grinding tool to crack sell of hardest shells for food.
2nd usage: they are used as nests tunnels walls to make it stable.

A) Greater surface wear on pebbles can't explain anything. So Eliminate.
B) It's just specifying the characteristics of ant species. Ans seems ambiguous, doesn't answer anything. Eliminate.
C) Pebbles positions and locations doesn't answer our question. So Eliminate.
D) Even if these seeds contain more nutrients, that doesn't imply that pebbles are being used as grinding tool. So Eliminate.
E) This substantially clears our doubt, if risk of tunnel collapsing it not a concern then definitely, ants are not using these as tunnel walls.
So the answer is E

A. surface wear will not tell between as reinforcement or a tool, both may ear and tear or may not even
B. Good to know but not helpful to decide
C. Knowing the deposits will not tell us anything. Any of the places may require reinforcement, and any can be an eating spot
D. Knowing about nutrients is amusing but unhelpful
E. Correct. This will help distinguish the 2. If for instance, the compact soil do not need pebbles, may they are only for structural purposes

E" seems more useful as this helps in distinguish these two functions.

I think the answer is E.

Argument - Biologist observed ants carry small pebbles. They survive on seeds but something they have is weak for the seeds to crack. Concluded that the pebbles work to open the seed shells. Alternative explanation that the pebbles are used to support the walls of their home.

A. Good option. Keep it as the pebbles may have surface wear tear by breaking the seeds.
B. Talking about other species which may not be relevant. Eliminate.
C. Storing something at some place does not mean that it cannot be used for different purpose. Eliminate.
D. Discussing about nutrients which is out of scope. eliminate.
E. Good option as it talks about this species in discussion and comparing at different location.

Comparing A and E, I think E is more precise as it talks about the species in discussion but how the other sample show results from different location and adding more data.

A - even if pebbles insides are worn out, does not necessarily imply they are used for grinding
B - info on use of pebbles by other species, does not provide info on usage of pebbles by species in question
C - does not provide info on usage based on where they are found
D - this is a statement about seeds, not about pebbles usage
E - best option. if soil is stable, no reinforcement needed, hence pebbles most likely used as grinding tool. if not stable then used for reinforcement.

a) Exxtreme assumptions in evaluate - If the wear and tear is not there, it does nto prove that its used for structural rigidity. hence thsi is not right
b) OTher harvester species characteristics are not comparable to thsi species hence this is out of scope
c)n Which chamber houses majority of the stones is out of scope for the Q
d) composition of nutrients of the seeds is not useful to determine whether stone is used for breakign them or for structural reinforcement
e) Negating this - if stones are not used given compact soil, then its used for walls and hence not used for compact soil nests. If stones are used in compact soil, its for seeds to be groud given structure is already strong. so thsi is correct choice used to evaluate

This took me a lot of time! I was very confused between A, B & C.
Reading the question I first thought it has to do something with more wear and tear of the pebbles or marks that would ascertain that they are being used as grinding tools but in hindsight that can also happened if force was applied enough when using them as reinforcements for the walls.

Option A suggests some form of wear of pebbles found in the nest interior as opposed to pebbles found in the surrounding area outside which strongly suggested that they may have been used as grinding tools.

Option B speaks about other other ant species using the pebbles for reinforcement of the walls where hard-shelled seeds consist of a large proportion of local food supply. But what if there are alternatives and and since large proportion is not major proportion, this made me more skeptical of the answer choice. There could also be some differences between the species of ant harvesters discussed in the option and in the para hence wasn't very sure of it.

Option C took me sometime to understand what brood-bearing chambers meant but it wasn't definitely in the granaries as has been mentioned or it could be outside the tunnel. This looked stronger but if the pebbles were not in the granaries and also not outside the tunnel, then it made their use more confusing for me. Hence avoided this option as well.

Went for option A. Don't know if it's right but don't feel too strong about the answer instead lol
